Cooper’s Furnace Hike

As I have mentioned before, I really love where we live. We have great neighbors, we are not too close to Atlanta but close enough if we want to do something and we are in short driving distance from several places to hike. This past week, my sister in law and I went to hike at Cooper’s Furnace which dates to the civil war era and the stone structure still stands. Since the older kids were still wiped out from the prior day’s activities (a hike and the pool), we just took my toddler with us.

We’ve done this hike several times but I had forgotten how narrow the path got at times and how difficult it was with a young one. The following picture is before the hard part!

He has just started grinning on demand for pictures and he is pretty cute, isn’t he! My favorite part of the walk was finding different mushrooms and wildflowers to photograph. The hike start with a wide path bordered by small creeks and vegetation.

A person can take this path/road all the way to the top for a less streneous walk: at the top you have a great view of the dam which I shared in another blog post.

This spot is usually fairly quiet and we passed maybe 3 different pairs of people hiking. There is also a visitor’s center at the top by the dam with a littl wildlife museum.

These mushrooms were tiny and very bright! It was really fun to notice different things growing.

There is so much to notice when one pays attention. My son loved me pointing out the different mushrooms.

While I love getting all of the children to hike with me, hiking with an adult was pretty nice too! No whining and complaining!

These past few months have made me really enjoy nature. Now with my twice a day walks, I have had the opportunity to see lots of deer and rabbits almost daily. The highlight of my run on Tuesday was seeing a doe nursing her fawn! The wild rabbits are quite cute too.

I am very grateful for God’s mercy and providence for our family the past 6 months. I am not sure what the next 6 months will bring but I hope to continue to enjoy the outdoors and be grateful for our family time.

A bientôt!
