Corra Harris House, Etowah Valley Historic Society

Last week, our local running group met up at the Corra Harris House for a run, a tour and dinner! This was a trial run for a possible race here to spread the word about this beautiful place that hopes to host limited event venues as well as teach others about who Corra Harris was. Most of us did not know about Corra Harris and this beautiful spot, and enjoyed every minute of our visit. The property is 57 acres and we started our run up the hill, past the spring house and through the barn.

There are some trails on the property and our run took us through one of them. It was beautiful and peaceful.

A Little History

I tried to take some notes during the presentation and hope I have my facts correct! There are 9 buildings on the property, including the cabin, a chapel, and a caretaker house.

Corra Harris (1869-1935) was a circuit rider’s wife. Corra Harris bought this property in 1913 and named it “In the Valley”. Rock from the local quarry was used to add to the foundation of the cabin. Corra Harris was the 1st woman in the state to own a car and was the 1 female battlefield war correspondent in WW1 for the Saturday Evening Post. Two of her books were turned into a movie (I’d Climb the Highest Mountain). She had 3 children of which one lived past birth.

She visited frequently with Martha Berry, Margaret Mitchell and Rebecca Latimer Felton. She was a prolific writer who died at the age of 65.

She left the property well founded but when the money ran out, it was sold at auction. One of our runner’s father’s uncle, Uncle Jodie bought it at auction and when he became too old to care for it, KSU (Kennesaw State University) bought it. Realizing the location was too far from the campus, the property was donated to Bartow County less than 2 years ago.

Corra is buried on the property and the chapel was built over her grave.

I hope you enjoy this little glimpse of an forgotten piece of history!
