Literacy magnet letters center
I remember a parent asking me one year at the beginning of the school year how many years I had taught and how many children I had. I guess she was concerned about my youth and wanted to make sure I was the right teacher for her son. While I have not been in the classroom for years now, I do have 6 years of experience in at the elementary level and also taught at the preschool level. I used the following literacy center with my third graders but also with 4 year old too, just using it for different activities.
Storage
Storage is important: you want your child to clean up after himself when he is done playing/learning. I found this little tool box at Walmart or Home depot and made sure there were enough drawers for letters and numbers too. I labeled the front with the letters so each child can sort the letters. This encourages children not to dump all the letters because it sure takes a while to put them all back where they go. My preschoolers learned that lesson pretty quickly! It also teaches them to recognize the upper and lower case letters.
Magnetic letters
I collected letters from yard sales, thrift stores and I am sure I also purchased a set. I used magnetic letters so the children can use them with the cookie trays which you can buy at the dollar store.
Games
Here are some games or activities the children can use the letters for.
- put the letters in alphabetical order
- create your own 2 or 3 letter words
- copy a word
- match upper and lower case letters
- write short rhyming words (fat, cat, rat, hat)
As the children get older they can work on more difficult rhyming words, writing homophones, working on syllables and using it with ESL children.

What a fabulous idea, Mireille. Keeping them organized like this can maybe help in future years, and I love how you can get them to do different activities with these letters.

That is why I kept it after I left teaching, I figured I would use it on my children but probably will not keep it until I have grandchildren lol!

Such a cute idea! My daughter keeps all the magnetic letters and alphabet on her refrigerator and my granddaughter runs to it constantly and pulls off letters if she hears it or recognizes it somewhere else.

Sweet! I think our last ones were scratching the fridge so I like the cookie sheets. But for easy access, the fridge is perfect!
