What do you need to save for an international trip
Some international trips are more expensive than others. When we visit the republic of Georgia we have a lot less that we need to save for so when planning this trip to France I needed to take several things into account, the first one being that France is a lot more expensive than Georgia.
Rental car
Last time we visited France we were able to borrow our friend’s car. This time we are traveling from Spain to the North of France so we are renting a car for 2 weeks. I went online and searched car rentals and selected the cheapest one. I ended up paying almost a hundred dollars more by waiting longer so I would suggest select a rental as soon as possible (this was several months before our planned trip). Because we are a large family, our rental is more expensive. I am bringing my 2 youngest car seats.
Tolls
Does the country you will be traveling in have tolls? I actually completely forgot about highways being toll highways in France and my friend reminded me of that fact. If you know where you will be traveling, you can estimate the cost by looking it up online.
Gas
Gas is a lot more expensive in Europe, especially in Western Europe! Remember you are paying by the liter and not the gallon.
Food
I dedicated a post about saving on food on trips and we plan to buy lunch food at the grocery store the week we are traveling. Breakfast will be from local bakeries (I cannot wait for fresh baguette, croissants and pain au chocolat!). We will have some dinners with friends that first week too. We will try to find inexpensive dinner options when we are on our own. I am bringing some snacks as emergencies too.
Souvenirs
We typically do not come back with much in the way of souvenirs. I usually like to bring back local wine, French mustard and herbes of Provence. The boys will probably come back with a t shirt and a key chain and of course we will have to get some gifts for friends.
Site fees
While a lot of our activities will be free as in seeing the sights, going to local markets, there will be some fees for certain sites. The boys love medieval castles so we plan to visit a few during this trip. We hope to spend a day in Paris seeing the sights but not actually visiting anything so that should make that day trip fairly inexpensive.

You are welcome! I should tally how much those particular items costs us: would be interesting to see!

Great tips. When I go to Europe, I usually use public transportation.

I looked at train tickets but with our family of 6, it would be to expensive. The rental gives us a lot of freedom. When I went back before I got married, public transportation was my friend! Same in large cities like New York or Rome: the subway is very handy and inexpensive.

And they are not cheap tolls like here in Georgia and Florida!

We drove all around Spain and Portugal before our kids were born and tolls are a great point! They can get pricey if you are driving a lot!

I am just glad my friend reminded me of them!

Good tips. When we go to the beach we rent a house and it really saves on meals to be able to have meals at the house. We go out some, but eat mostly at the house. When we’re staying in hotels, we usually eat a big breakfast then skip lunch and just have dinner. That helps too.

We love it when we can cook. Saves so much! Nowadays we can’t skip meals or the boys will revolt, lol! Hoping to picnic a lot on this coming trip!

My husband always likes to rent a car and he is much more comfortable at driving abroad or even in another state than I am! These are such great tips! I am excited for our trips this summer.

Yes, my husband is the one who drives abroad! Especially that we usually rent a stick shift because they are cheaper!

These are great tips! We always try to make our own breakfast and lunch and the splurge on dinners.

Oh I forgot about tolls! We don’t have many in Southern California but I know other places, there’s no getting anywhere without going through the tolls. Thanks for sharing these tips with us at #OMGHWW.

Yes, things you forget about add up!

Such great tips. Food is a big expense when traveling. We usually pick hotels that include breakfast, and then we usually just snack during the day, followed by an early dinner. So we only have to pay to eat out once a day.

Yes! A little harder with kids sometimes but as long as we have snacks kids can hold off till real meal!
