Horse Pens 40, Alabama
We spent our mini fall break at our uncle’s lakehouse! He is always so hospitable and we enjoy visiting him and finding new places to discover nearby. My youngest is at the age of where it is easier for us if we are on the go when in a place like that so one of the places he suggested we visit was Horse Pens 40. This outdoor nature park is privately owned (it was $8 for ages 10 and up) and is well known by rock climbers as a bouldering sites. It was used at times by native americans to corral horses, by the confederate army to store supplies and now hold bluegrass festivals and welcomes visitors every day.
My outfit
I decided to wear my camo pants with a black tee and a black athletic top and my black sneakers. Camo and black is such an obvious and sleek combination. I am still trying to get my cost per wear for this Zella zip up sweatshirt moto jacket but I do love it!
I really do need to get a new pair of black sneaks but they are not on the top of my list so I wear black socks since the hole on the toe is still small!
The boulders
Some of the boulders have names while others are just a seires of boulders. We saw many young people with climbing gear working at practicing their hold and grips. They carried safety pads on their backs that they could lay below.
The children climbed easier rocks such as the elephant rock (above) and turtle rock (below).
At the entrance to the boulder area, there are steps leading up to the top platform.
The area is really impressive! There are so many boulders!
It was definitely was worth the 35 minutes drive from the lake and the kids really enjoyed it. It would be fun to come with a picnic and take our time exploring more of the park.
I am leaving you with mushroom rock: how did this one come to be? It looks like boulders layered upon each other!

It’s supposed to me one of the largest places like that in the world! So many boulders!

What a great place to hike. We have a park near us with some areas that look similar.

I love exploring places like this!

That looks like the kind of place that my boys and I would love! It reminds me a bit of our Purgatory Chasm that we try to hike a few times a year; we just love climbing over the rocks.

Neat!

Haha I never would have guessed that there’s a hole in your sneakers! Your sock trick is genius. This sounds like such a fun visit and I love how you still managed to look cute while exploring. 🙂

They could have climbed for longer but I was worried that eventually someone would fall and get hurt!

Mireille, what an amazingly cool place! I would love to explore and climb those boulders. And you know bluegrass festivals are my thing, so I would totally want to go there for that! Such wonderful history you described of that area, too. You crack me up about the hole in your shoe! Haha. I photographed an outfit that will be on my blog today wearing tights…I had to add ankle socks because I cut my ankle shaving and you could see the bandaid through my tights! The things we do for blogging to mask all the little mishaps like holes in shoes and cuts on ankles. LOL Your outfit is super cute and perfect for boulder climbing and exploring! Thanks for linking up!

Thanks, Shelbee! Lol about the bandaid! It is funny how my son has gotten really good with taking pictures! He does really good. I have learned to stand up straighter! Yes, this place in Alabama sure was cool.
