Visiting Rome, GA

Visiting one’s backyard can be provide an afternoon of fun for little or no money. After celebrating my father’s 80th birthday in Rome, GA, we spent a couple of hours walking around town. Rome is built where the Etowah and the Oostanaula rivers meet forming the Coosa River. It is also built on seven hills which inspired the settlers to name it Rome. While still a small city (36,000+ in 2017), Rome has a number of historical places to visit, a cute downtown area and nicely developed area to walk by the river and hosts Berry College which has a beautiful campus. I will share pictures of the campus on Friday since the beauty of the campus warrants a full post.

On this day, we first went by the river.

The area is well maintained with a beautiful bridge with iron work and benches and different spots to sit. My parents enjoyed the sunshine while we walked accross the bridge. On the other side is a hotel which would be fun to stay at with the views and proximity to the shop in the downtown area.

The fountain reminded me of all of the fountains in Rome, Italy. Another nod to its namesake is the Capitoline Wolf sculpture which is a miniature version of the original and was gifted by Mussolini in 1929.

There are a couple of churches on the hill with pretty architecture which reminds me that I should dedicate a post to the Berry University: I have never seen such a beautiful campus!

I love this large garage door: at first I thought that it was a fire station but it appears to me someones garage instead. Great backdrop for a picture, though!

The boys are used to exploring with us but they sure were tired after walking the different blocks. The downtown area is not very large but about 4-5 blocks long and 2 blocks wide. We actually came upon a Shriner’s parade which was kind of fun. Then we had to explain who the Shriners were to my oldest.

This sign was scary since the street is already at quite a level higher than the river, probably the level of the bridge. Imagine that much water and the destruction from it! I cannot fathom it!

We originally had not thought about visiting around when we met up with my dad and mom but it sure was a nice couple of hours. It was such a pretty day and not too cold. We had not done something like this in a while so I enjoyed it quite a lot.
