Silver Comet Trail Bike Ride
“The Silver Comet Trail is 61.5 miles long, and starts at the Mavell Road Trailhead in Smyrna, Georgia. It ends at the Georgia/Alabama state line, near Cedartown and The Esom Hill Trailhead.
At the Georgia/Alabama state line, the Silver Comet connects to the 33-mile long Chief Ladiga Trail. Both the Silver Comet Trail and Chief Ladiga are fully paved rail-trails built on abandoned railroad lines. The combined Silver Comet and Chief Ladiga trail length is estimated to be 94.5 paved miles from Smyrna, Georgia to Anniston, Alabama. ” (from the Silver Comet Trail Official Website)
For the past year or so, I have been wanting to walk or ride part of the Silver Comet Trail to reach the Brushy Mountain Tunnel. So finally last weekend, we packed up a picnic, sprayed on some sunscreen, grabbed our hats and waters and headed to a portion of the trail that is just a few miles from the tunnel. It is close to my parent’s house so I knew the location and was just 30 minutes from our house.
I probably didn’t make the best choice by wearing a pair of white shorts but they came out clean in the wash! We are hoping to bike again this weekend and I will wear a longer pair of shorts with a tank.
I really loved every minute of our ride. The temperature was pleasant in the upper 70s and low 80s and most of the trail is shaded. It is surrounded by woods on both sides, the occasional creek and foot trail. I felt like I was back in Europe.
The tunnel was really fun to go through! The boys loved making echos.
The tunnel was about 3 miles from where we started and we continued on a few more miles before stopping to have lunch.
We ended up riding a total of 18 miles, turning at the marker 24. Everyone enjoyed it and didn’t complain about how long it was because the trail is flat and shaded and picturesque.
We did see a couple of snakes including a copperhead that was pointed to us and a bullfrog too.
The children are learning to be aware of their surroundings, and to be respectful of nature. They are also learning to be observant.
See the bullfrog! He was a big one. Both him and the copperhead were in the rocks before the tunnel. The area is sunny and there is also some water gathering there: there were even little fish in the puddle/creek.
Hope you enjoyed this tag along ride! Can’t wait to go back!
A bientôt!

That was fun to join in (and a lot less exertion on my part…haha). The fact that part was shady made it wonderful I bet.

Yes! I love that part: shade! Otherwise it would not be nearly as pleasant.

Looks like a great biking trail to explore! It’s always good to be aware of your surrounding when out in nature! I wouldn’t mind the frog but the snakes would really scare me. Still neat to see though! My hubby saw one recently on a short hike we went on by a local lake. It disappeared before I saw it.

So far none of the wildlife has been too scary: this snake was pointed out to us and it was sleeping and sunning itself.

Sounds like a fun family ride and the trails are very picturesque . The shade would have made it very pleasant. Not sure about the snake though. Enjoy your next ride.

What an awesome trail! We’re lucky to have some running/biking trails in our neighborhood that traverse the southern part of the city. It’s really fun to get out there and ride!

I think it helped that we were not surprised by it and pointed out to it so it was curiosity vs fear.

Oh GOSH, a copperhead! Eek!! And you got a photo of it, too! Wow, what a beautiful spot to bike to and how fun to have a picnic lunch on the way. My son and I have been visiting different parks to run and walk and we are planning this one tomorrow where we get to run over a bridge that crosses the Missouri river.

Thanks, Shelbee! It is a great trail. We tried it going the other way last weekend: not so shady and not so pretty!
