Charleston: Where to Eat

I planned my budget for our Charleston trip knowing that the majority of our expenses would be related to food since we planned to eat out for lunch and dinner. Charleston is well known for its restaurants and offers quite a variety of dishes. You can enjoy low country food, seafood and also international fare. I had a list of restaurants to try and we ended up eating at 3 of them and discovered a couple of other gems. We did not have a bad meal and had fun having the kids rate their dining experiences.

I will start with our best meal on our trip: we ate at Fleet Landing Seafood. This was also our most expensive meal but the quality was amazing. My husband and I had a drink and we also ordered some appetizers.

The seafood hush puppies were delightful and my flank steak salad right on the money. My oldest ordered the shrimp and grits and I had a bite: that was one great choice too! The restaurant is on the bay and we enjoyed the view of the water and pelicans.

The Glass Onion

This restaurant was about 15 minutes from the Historic District and boasts fame for its low country fare. We ordered a couple appetizers and desserts as well as the pork chops family dinner.

Of course, we had to had some fried green tomatoes!

Leon’s

This is the first restaurant we tried after our almost 6 hour drive (the kids all needed potty breaks at different times) and we were fairly hungry.

The restaurant had a nice ambiance and we ordered fish sandwiches (2 chose mahi while one chose fried catfish). Their scalloped potatoes were really good. The boys enjoyed the food but I felt it was pricey for what it was.

Moving on to a pretty nice surprise was a French bakery just around the corner from our hotel. We had planned to eat the hotel’s free breakfast but it sure was nothing to write home about: because of Covid they did not offer a full service breakfast but had scrambled eggs, sausages, and pancakes and some cold items. After 2 days of that, my husband discovered La Patisserie on the same block as our hotel.

La Patisserie

This French bakery is part of Hotel Bennett and the French pastry chef Remy Funfrock is the creator of some delicious pastries. Now I was very impressed by the croissants, pain aux chocolats and pains aux raisins. These were the most authentic viennoiseries I have had in the US. They rivaled the ones I enjoyed the most in France. I was even willing the pay the pricey price tag associated with these delightful breakfast items 3 days in a row!

We did meet the pastry chef the last morning and shared our enjoyment of his bakery.

The Candy Kitchen

My son and I enjoyed an overpriced icecream here but the shop sure was fun!

Noteworthy was Pizzeria di Giovanni on North Market Street. We enjoyed a 24 inch pizza and enjoyed every bite of it! Little hole in the wall location next door to a great kite shop called Kites Fly’n Hi.

There were so many restaurants we could have eaten at and we then discovered that Mount Pleasant just accross the bay and 10 minutes from our hotel had an also an amazing selection of restaurants. In the future, I definitely would be more prepared for my food budget!
