Linville Gorge and Falls, NC
We took a short vacation after Christmas in search of snow. Well, snow we did not find however we did enjoy a half day of snow tube in North Carolina on some fake snow! We booked our couple hours of fun at Jonas Ridge Snow tubing and had a ball. Since it was a warm week, I knew it would be pleasant to hike to I looked up a few places near where we were staying (Morganton, NC) so we could enjoy the outdoors. It was fairly busy everywhere we went as others had the same idea but we were still able to enjoy our surroundings and fresh air.
Linville gorge and falls is in the mountains of western North Carolina and is part of Pisgah National Forest. The river drops 2000 feet below and that was one of my favorite views of our hike.
Our favorite hikes include some type of water source or scenery and the younger boys prefer shorter hikes. This hike fit the bill with pretty waterfalls and drops and really being fairly short. I think the total we walked was probably 2 miles.
These are the first two falls we came too. Of course, everyone had to explore the rocks and see how far they could go. Thankfully nobody slipped nor got hurt.
I picked up a pair of trail shoes a month or two ago to replace my too small hiking boots and it makes hiking much more pleasant. I typically hold my youngest’s hand or carry him so being sure footed is a must. It had rained recently so there were wet leaves and rocks in abundance.
I love how part of the path and steps were made naturally in the rock. It is always majestic to walk by a rock facade.
I do need to spend more time enjoying the scenery: my husband always has to tell me to slow down and just enjoy!
The hike then took us to see another waterfall from up high. If you look at the first picture, you can see the waterfalls from above really small in the background. That was a pretty cool view!
On the ride back we stopped at a scenic parking spot to enjoy the beautiful views. The only thing I regretted from this day was that I did not pack sandwiches to have a picnic (as well as the following day). One of the disadvantage of staying in a hotel is that we end up spending lots of money on food. We still came ahead since our hotel stay and free breakfast were taken care with my husband’s hotel points. I will say though that I didn’t sleep as well these few days and I missed the ability of enjoying coffee with a view. Staying in this hotel (just the Hampton Inn in Morganton) did not offer any views and we felt a little cramped. But we only had enough points for this particular hotel as we were staying 4 nights and booking two rooms. Made me miss the awesome hotel in Spain that was worth the same amount of points as this one. You need to check out the post to admire the views and pretty room. Oh we all miss Spain!
A bientôt!

Gorgeous pictures! This is such beaufitul country. We vacationed near Chimney Rock and Lake Lure last summer. We had a wonderful time and loved hiking in the NC mountains.

I will have to look up those two spots!

Ah, we all miss Spain! They currently won’t allow UK travellers to visit!
Spectacular views from your trail – and love the pics.
Your lilac hoody reminds me how much I love that color.
Thanks for linking!

How nice that you got to get away for a few days! The views on your hikes look so pretty! But I can totally understand you didn’t like the hotel room without a view. We once got a room in downtown St. Louis with no view at all! I think the window was facing an un-used hallway. So creepy too!I It was worse than the hotel room we once got with a view of an old cemetary (although I remember having nightmares that time). Both were before the internet, at least before Tripadisor etc. and last minute decisions so no way to research before.
Had to click through to your Spain post, what gorgeous photos!!

Can’t beat a free hotel stay so I endured the no view but it might be the last time we do that!

Still wishing for that snow!

My favorite hikes are those that take place near some sort of water too and a pretty view is definitely a must. This looks like such a fun day… but that stay in Spain looked AMAZING!!

Yes, we sure miss Spain! But hoping to have some other pretty cool trips this year. We shall see.

What amazing photos, Mireille! Snow seems to be quite elusive this year unless you live in the Pacific Northwest!
Thanks for sharing this little family trip!

I know! It’s kind of crazy, earlier this week there was snow a couple hours west of us in Alabama and a few hours north in Tennesse. We just want a little fun in the snow. It has been about 4 years since we had a good one here.
