New Orleans: A Peek into the Garden District

We stayed in an Airbnb in the garden district on Tchoupitoulas about 4 blocks from Magazine Street. We were directly across the Mississipi harbor and train tracks but quite frankly I only heard the train once during our week there. We were walking distance from a Rouses Market grocery store and there were 2 restaurants (which we did not try but looked very popular) on our street a block away. The location felt safe and we had a parking spot in front of our shotgun house.

No, this was not our Airbnb but a pretty one nearby. We walked a couple of times to Magazine Street, once for dinner and once for dessert so today I am sharing a few of the houses that caught my eye.

This one was about 5 blocks up towards St. Charles Street. There were some grand houses as well as some smaller ones but all had a lot of character.

A few houses had these colorful flowers as decorations. I love how color was brought in different ways. Our second walk to Magazine Street took us to Sucre, a beautiful sweets shops.

I had never had macarons before even though I grew up in France. A French macaron is a meringue base confection: sugar and egg whites are the main ingredients. I was surprised at how much I enjoyed them.

I was impressed by the beautiful displays. Macarons sure are colorful and come quite a variety.

My oldest chose from one of the shiny desserts below: I love how all of these desserts are sparkly like golden jewels.

The rest of the family chose some icecream and everyone enjoyed their treat.

I do recommend stopping by Sucre for a sweet if you are near Magazine Street. It was a delightful spot.

A bientôt!

My son just made some macarons this year in culinary and brought a few home for us to try; we didn’t expect to like them since we aren’t fans of meringue cookies but they really were quite yummy. I have a second cousin that lives in New Orleans and it looks/sounds like such a fun city to visit and explore with so much art and culture.

I love the pix of the New Orleans houses and think it must be a great place to visit. And oh yes, macarons – yum, they really are delicious!

It it one of those towns like Charleston, SC and Savannah, GA with a lot of charm and historic homes.

It’s before 7 am and I have a sugar craving now! LOL! Good desert is my pitfall for sure, and just looking at the display case has my mouth watering. I have to say, I would have likely gone with one of the other deserts. I like macroons okay but it’s not somethign I would naturally gravitate towards. I love the first two homes, straight up out of a movie scene.

Looks like you had a fantastic vacay.

It was a really good vacay albeit not super budget friendly lol! I think the other desserts looked to sweet for me.

Those houses are so fun and beautiful! And what yummy treats! I love macaroons but never attempted to make my own! We don’t have a bakery here that sells them, but do get some occasionally from Aldi (from the freezer department). They are a good substitute to those from a bakery IMO. I really need to try making my own though sometime, heard it’s a bit complicated and time consuming!

I need to check the freezer section at Aldi! It would be a fun dessert for a special occasion and not work on my part!

If you haven’t been to the botanical gardens there, check out last week’s post about our visit: it was gorgeous!

I’m shocked you never had a macaron before. We were just talking about them last week.
And we always love houses with character like those. It’s so fun to tour around and see them. I always wish we could go inside too.
    XOXO

I am shocked too but I guess I am not that fancy! There are so many delicious French pastries to eat and macarons were never something I thought would taste good.

Oh, you are killing me with these posts. I forget the name of the reality show that was filmed in New Orleans in the late 90s or maybe 2000. But my girls were huge fans. And we went to New Orleans on vacation partially so they could see the house where the show was filmed. I believe it was in the Garden District. Just asked my daughter…the Real World was the name of the show. Anyway, the house where they filmed was a disappointment but the other houses we saw were magnificent.

My mother made macaroons but they were coconut. I have seen these beautiful macarons but never had one. Need to remedy that.

Found this on Wikipedia: The season featured seven people who lived in a remodeled Civil War-era mansion, called The Belfort, in the Garden District, New Orleans and is the first of two seasons to be filmed in New Orleans. Ten years later, the show made a return in the twenty-fourth season.

2 more posts to go! I hope I have inspired different people to go visit New Orleans! It wasn’t a short drive for us at 7 hours without counting the stops but no regrets!

Thanks so much for sharing your vacation with us, Mireille! I loved seeing the shotgun houses in New Orleans. And, I’m a sucker for a painted house! There is a blog called probablythis.com. It’s a couple of guys who are renovating a shotgun house in a big and bold way!

Those sweet treats look quite yummy!!

Very cool! I have seen a couple reno shows with shotgun houses and it is really good how big the space can look. We didn’t feel cramped at all in ours (it wasn’t as picturesque as this one though.
