Tulemar Resort: The Animals
When we booked our 2 nights at Tulemar Resort, one of the things that drew my attention apart from the nice accomodations and the pretty scenery (jungle and beach) was the opportunity to more than likely see animals living in their natural habitat. It is one thing to observe animals at a zoo or rescue center but completely different to observe those animals living in the trees and bushes around you. So when I woke up early the first morning I went on a walk by myself as my husband wanted to sleep in a little longer.
The first animal I came accross was an agouti which is a large rodent similar to a capybara but smaller. I actually saw about 5 on my walk either crossing the road or walking in the bushes near it.
The basilisk lizards liked the area around the pool and we spotted another one near the road too: my husband was really good at noticing the different animals. This particular one was pretty cool as we saw him crawl on just 2 legs!
Our favorite was probably the sloth since we only saw her one afternoon, eating and hanging upside down with her little one hanging onto her. One of my friends loves sloths so I made sure to document our sighting.
The spider monkey above is a little difficult to spot. He is near the main trunk, halfway up. The blue rope you see below is hung here and there between trees to allow animals to cross the roads in safety.
Our first breakfast we saw a toucan (pictures above near the tree top) and 3 macaws flying by. That was incredible!
Another reason I would recommend Tulemar Resort is definitely the wildlife you get to observe!
Now I saved the best for last! Imagine waking up around 5 am with your husband in the bathroom. Then you hear this strange loud noise. Is it the pipes? Did the hubby break the bathroom? No, the sound is coming from outside. But we haven’t observed any monkey near our bungalow… We do recognize the sound and it sounds really close. We decide to go outside to see if we can spot this wild beast!
We never did see him and continued on for several minutes and then most have gone back. This is the sound of a howler monkey!
Hope you enjoyed this post!

Oh my goodness, that howler monkey! That is a really scary sound. I didn’t know there was an animal called an “agouti” – that’s a term for a fur pattern in rabbits (and some other animals) but I didn’t know its origins. Love that you saw such great wildlife on your trip – thanks for sharing with us!

We had to look him up. The great thing about phone nowadays is that info is minutes away.

That sound is so cool and insane! When we were in Costa Rica, the resort we stayed at had a huge parrot that talked. We kept saying hello and it finally said Hola! We laughed becuase we forgot we were in Spanish speaking country. That bird was thinking those crazy Americans! Lol!

Funny, Kathrine! I think it’s cool how people who work there get used to it all. And we just stand there looking at the trees with wonder in our eyes.

For sure, Marsha. The howlers didn’t sound so loud when they were up in the trees when we were walking around. I still have not idea where he was but he was close.

I want to go so badly!

I’d have sworn you were about to be dinner for a lion. Or whatever big cat might live in Costa Rica. Holy smokes. They should be called roaring monkeys not howler monkeys. Yikes.
When we were living in Panama, a sloth fell out of a tree and onto my Siberian husky’s back. My husky took off running and the sloth stayed on his back until they were into the jungle. Crazy. Sloths are having a moment in the spotlight right now. I see them in all kind of children’s prints and crib sheets, wall decorations. They are cute!!

Lol! That is a funny story about the sloth, I will have to share it with my friend who loves sloths.

Seeing all these animals ” up close and personal” must be amazing!

It was quite a treat!

Wow, what an experience and that howler monkey – double wow! I agree that being with them like that is very different to seeing them in a zoo!

It was quite a fun trip.
