Ranching: Close Up

Last month, N. and I headed about 30 minutes from home to go observe my friend and her family work their “cattle”. We arrived for the tagging of the calves, vaccinations and … castration!

We had never been to such an event and arrived after lunch but we were able to get some dessert. This is a friend from running club so several of our group were there.

We first said hi to the horses that had been used to gather the calves. The calves were all gathered in one area and were mooing for their moms.

They knew they probably wouldn’t like what was coming up! The funny thing is that the female calves complained a lot more than the males even though all they got was their tags and some oral vaccine.

Two calves waiting their turn!

Calf is waiting for it all!

Drink up and get your ear tags!

All done!

This was an interesting visit. My son decided he wouldn’t come back next year! We missed the first part of the morning so I am not sure what else happened or if it was more exciting. As for me, I love seeing ranch life happen and learning about other ways of life so I thought this was a cool outing.

A bientĂ´t!
