Hayesville, North Carolina
I had never heard of Hayesville, NC until I booked our rental, but the area turned out to be a delightful area to spend a week in summer. The weather was pleasant, nature was just beautiful (that combination of mountains, trees and fields is gorgeous) and there was lots to do. Today I am sharing the tiny town of Hayesville and a few pictures of our cabin and surroundings. Hayesville is a small town with a population of about 450 and is about 20 min from Hiawassee, GA and Murphy, NC.
While waiting for our pizza to be ready that first evening, we walked around the square and admired the views. We actually met the mayor as we were admiring the courthouse and spoke to him for a bit. While tiny, the town is very picturesque.
We admired some of the homes and took our time strolling. There are a number of painted quilts as well as a mural so we tried to see how many we could find.
There were a few restaurants including the pizza parlor and a brewery and a couple of shops.
We couldn’t have asked for better weather: it didn’t rain till the day we left and the mornings were cool starting in the mid 50s and warming up to about 80 degrees.
I’ve given up about being budget friendly while on vacation as I have found that we typically spend $600 on food for a week for our family of 6 on vacation. That includes 3 meals a day, typically one or two restaurant outings and snacks. It is not worth the stress to worry about it and I budget for it.
All of our activities were free apart from renting a pontoon boat half a day which was very nice. It also turned out that 2 friends had homes nearby so we had great fun the last 2 days of our visit: one afternoon was spent touring our friends’ property and them taking us out to a farm to table dining spot, while the last afternoon was spent on the lake where our friends taught my hubby and oldest to wake surf. We were very grateful for those 2 special afternoon creating new friendships.
Above is a peek at the cabin we rented by a creek. It is nestled right next to a forest and it was a very peaceful spot.

It really was peaceful. The sounds of the creek were perfect but the funny thing is that because it was so wooded, you couldn’t tell how sunny it actually was.

It really was.

But really you are budget conscious. I mean, when Rob and I go for a weekend away, we can count on it being $1000 if we are flying.
The mental health aspect is worth the money for sure,

I think part of it, is that I am comparing it to what we used to spend. We spend about 3 times on rentals than we used to but prices have gone up and we do get bigger and better locations now. Foodwise I guess is the same too.

I am surprised you only spend $600 on food with four boys and a husband! Eating out around here has become quite expensive…even fast food adds up so quickly.
I think your vacation spot sounds wonderful. I’m jotting it down as a place to consider. I love small towns where you can just browse and not have to worry about traffic or parking or any of that.
Thanks for sharing, Mireille!

We definitely try to limit the eating out but even eating in adds up plus being on vacation we do enjoy nice breakfasts and add more snacks.

What a fun visit! It looks like such a cute town and learning to wake surf sounds like a blast (as does the pontoon boat).
