High Shoals Falls, GA

The same day we visited Hamilton Gardens in Hiawassee, GA, we drove about 20 minutes away to visit High Shoals Falls. We had seen pictures of the pretty falls so we knew we would enjoy the hike. The dirt road up to the fall hike trailhead was very manageable and there several parking spaces. Since the first week in June was still fairly cool for Georgia and the hike had lots of tree coverage, it was a very pleasant hike. Hiking with children ages 5 to 16 also insures that we are not walking too fast.

The hike is 2.6 miles total (in and out) and starts high up going down towards the falls. I loved all of the moss and greenery. It always reminds me of movies like Lord of the Rings and it also made me think of Costa Rica.

After walking for a while, I started wondering where the waterfalls were. But we finally go closer: after this small river or creek, the area drops! It is fun to hike in a new place, but you are not sure what you are going to discover.

There are actually two waterfalls. The first one has a really nice area where one can swim. It was fairly deep and cold and we only dipped our toes. Nobody wanted to hike back wet and we did not have towels with us.

The second waterfall was somewhat climbable (I never like it when my hubby and son(s) want to be a little adventurous) so I headed back after they were up. I am somewhat of a helicopter mom and I get worried someone will break a bone!

I definitely recommend this hike: it is not too long, not too difficult and the waterfalls are really pretty and worth the walk. We saw a number of older teenagers with towels on the trail.

This was a good day!
