The Pacific Coast of Costa Rica

When planning this trip to Costa Rica, I had to make the decision of which coast to visit: the Pacific side or the Carribean side. The pictures I saw actually did not help the decision. I ended up basing my decision on the location of the Manuel Antonio National Park which we ended up not visiting. However the landscape where we stayed is very similar to the park. We stopped in a couple of spots for pictures on the way to Quepos from San Jose but were a bit hurried as I was ready to reach our destination.

The first thing I will say is that none of the pictures I saw did justice to how beautiful and wild the coast is. We left after check out from the resort and took our time. I saw a young couple by the rocks and saw a parking area in this spot so we decide to go and explore. We probably spent 45 min to an hour here, climbing the rocks and just enjoying the beauty.

Both my husband and I were wearing comfortable water shoes (Keens) so we were ready for our little adventure. There were little crabs crawling in some spots and different tide pools with fish and strange creatures.

The waves were quite large breaking on the rocks so you definitely wouldn’t want to swim out there! But it sure was a grand view.

Tide Pools

My husband called this tide pool a lagoon because it one spot it was probably 5 feet deep while it was fairly shallow in another area. The water was very clear and the weather perfect. Rainy season? We had great weather that first week of October!

One of my favorite thing about this coastline is its wildness. Trees and plants grow close to the beach and it is not developped in a lot of areas. This spot was before Jacos (party town that I would not recommend, we stayed away) coming from Quepos on the way to San Jose.

It was windy! The little video below really gives me all the feels about this trip! It was quite amazing to travel without the kids (and I do enjoy traveling with them and showing them the world) and just being an adult without responsibilities for a few days. And yes, we did video chat with the kiddos every night.

Pura Vida!!

South American Crocodiles

I will leave you with a picture of the hubby looking at the South American crocodiles in the river below. This is further down and yes, Costa Rica can boast some large crocodiles. They like the rivers near the ocean and these were some really large specimens.

This is a spot where they like to be, so the locals have a number of souvenir shops by the bridge which is protected from the road by a cement barrier since all the tourist stop here for a glimpse of the reptiles. The crocodile is on the muddy bank on the left side of that triangular inlet. Ready to go to Costa Rica? I have 4 more posts to share with you!
