Tbilisi, the food, the market (Republic of Georgia part 2)

Welcome part to my series of post about our trip to the Republic of Georgia. Today I will share about the food (I could fly there right now just for some hachipuri or kinkali!) and my visit of the market.

Fresh food

One thing you will notice when you visit the Republic of Georgia is the fresh food. Meals are most often served with a tomato and cucumber salad, cheese and fresh bread.

Ingredients come fresh from the market if possible and our experience at Hotel Gomi and our stays in the country proved that! The food is delicious!

The market

After our first visit, I knew that I wanted to visit one of the markets in Tbilisi. So one morning, I accompanied Goma who typically shops for the fresh meats, fruits and legumes for the meal at the hotel (Mari prepares delicious Georgian meals that you can add to your stay and to this day, I still not replicate her delicious eggs for breakfast).

I am not sure the name of the market we visit but one portion hosted the meat and other wares in a building while the vegetables, fruits and nuts as well as the cheese where outdoors. I will let the pictures tell you the story! This is one thing that I miss here in the US, going to the Farmers market is not quite the same experience as doing so in Europe.

The food

As I mentioned, the food we ate was always fresh and tasty. Some dishes are spicy, herbs are used frequently and wine usually accompanies your meal or lemonade if you do not drink. There are a wide variety of lemonade, lemon of course, pear, and tarragon is a Georgian favorite.

My favorite dishes include chicken in a special creamy sauce, grilled pork called shashlik, hachipuri which is a dough with cheese and kinkali which are dumplings filled with meat and spices. Oh, now I am going to have to plan another trip to Georgia soon to eat some these tasty treats!

We also got to meet Carla Capalbo who wrote this book about Georgian food, its region and its wine. If you want to learn more about Georgia through its food, I would recommend this book which you can find on Amazon.

And I will end with this beautiful bowl of ice cream with strawberries (for you Rob at filofeast)

A bientôt!
