Weekend trip to Savannah
This past weekend, we had a short family getaway to Savannah, GA. Savannah is about a 4 1/2 hour drive from our house.I have traveled there with my husband and also some friends on different occasions for an overnight trip as well as day trips. This time we decided to have a mini vacation because we were going to be halfway there since my oldest was being recognized at a Duke Tip ceremony for his SAT scores as a 7th grader near Macon, GA.
While this trip still was fun, because I had not planned it out as well as I usually do a trip (with ideas of where to eat, exactly what we plan to visit), I was a little stressed out. The weather was not the best with a tornado warning while we were relaxing in our hotel but we were able to do the few things we had planned.
UGA Marine Education Center
First up was a visit to the UGA Marine Education Center. While it was an interesting place to visit, the aquarium part of it was very small and we were done in less than 20 minutes. There were some trails one could walk but the weather did not cooperate. We did enjoy the fish tanks though! We have been spoiled with visiting the Georgia Aquarium in Atlanta and the Chattanooga Aquarium a few times so it is hard to compare any other aquarium with them.
Savannah Historic District
After a stop at our hotel, we drove to downtown Savannah and this is where I wished I had done my research. I know there are a lot of beautiful stately homes in Savannah as well as great restaurants but we just kind of wandered instead of having a destination. We didn’t see as much as we could have or ate where we could have but it was still pretty and enjoyable!
We walked by the river for just a bit and my oldest took a few pictures.
We then walked in the historic district for a little while until it rained again and then we headed back to our hotel after dinner. The children were exhausted since it was past their bedtime! There are lovely squares with different monuments to historic figures. Lots of history in Savannah!
Tybee Island
The next morning we headed to Tybee Island to visit the light house and have a quick stop on the beach. This is the part of the trip that I had planned out so I was a lot more relaxed!
The light house has 158 steps to an observation deck, it has several lighthouse keepers cottages that you can visit and your admission ticket allows you to visit the battery museum accross the street too.
Last was a little fun on the beach. I was kind of cranky probably because I was hungry and I didn’t know where we would eat. We ended up eating at a restaurant on the beach called the Deck which was a pleasant experience since we ate outdoors with a view of the ocean. The food was good but not exceptional.
I hope you enjoyed our little visit to Savannah and Tybee Island. It is definitely an area where you need to spend several days to enjoy all it has to offer.
A bientôt!

We used to be huge planners and make sure every second was accounted for. But I do think that some of the funnest times we’ve had are when we just wandered and had no agenda!!!

Maybe I was just having a bad day! I just didn’t have as much fun as I usually do when we are out of town!

Savanah looks beautiful and I’m sure all the history was really interesting. I loved learning about the Charleston history when we were there.

Aren’t the short trips away the best! So relaxing! And anything near water is good for me!

My husband and I were in Savannah a couple of years ago and absolutely loved it! That Catholic church was one of my favorite places. We have a picture of it in our living room and we stayed in an Inn very close. Love all your photos!

I’ve always wanted to visit Savannah; but like you I prefer to research and plan like crazy when we go away on trips. I have been trying to be a bit more spontaneous though and have started not planning short little trips when it’s just my husband and I.

Nice! I think it is a lil easier to be spontaneous when we don’t have the kids in tow!

My sister and her husband live in Savannah and we’ve walked around the streets and through the shops in the historic district. It was beautiful, but I didn’t know about Tybee Island! I’m thinking we will have to do that on our next visit! Thank you for sharing!

It is so close and definitely worth it: a lot of fun quirky stores and shops, nice beach and some historical things too! Less than 30 minutes from downtown Savannah!
