Montpellier, a university town

I lived 7 years less than 2 hours from Montpellier but for some reason, it was not a town that we visited. I am sure we have been to Montpellier and driven through it but I do not recall visiting the downtown area. My older brother actually spent two years there at the university and after spending an afternoon there, I came away with how pretty of a town it is!

We met my high school friend Caroline which I hadn’t seen in 21 years at her apartment and after some refreshments she and her family gave us a walking tour of the town. Through cobbled streets and other pedestrian streets we walked and were impressed with the architecture and how much the town has to offer. We had fun exploring the fun toy store pictured below and trying on paper masks. This store went on and on as you traveled back into it with different miniature collectible figures and toys of all kinds.

The cathedral of St Pierre was very grand and impressive. The facade of the cathedral has been recently pressure washed and it looked like a new building! It was rebuilt in the 17th century but was originally built in the 1300’s.

I loved this barbershop’s window, I thought it very pretty.

We visited more of the town but I am quite unimpressed with the rest of my pictures so I will bring you to the following day’s expedition to a small village’s outdoor’s market where we bought lunch goodies and I bought another straw basket for myself.

After picniquing by the river we went to the beach town of Palavas les Flots where we enjoyed some relaxation in the sand, yummy crepes with Nutella and got lost on the way back to the car!

I really enjoyed this time with my friend and her family! It felt so good to see each other after so many years and it felt just like yesterday! I am so grateful that she found me on Facebook after we lost touch. Friendships are such an important of life and this trip visiting my two oldest friends reminded me of that. While we do get busy with the busyness of life, work and family, it is important to treasure and nurture our friendships. I try to do that through phone calls or when my friends live abroad through texting through messenger and Whatsapp, sharing pictures and snippets of my daily life. And I probably won’t want to wait 5 to 6 years to go back to France, so I must become thriftier!

A bientĂ´t!
