Midwest Road trip Outfits

Last week, I took the boys on a roadtrip to visit a college friend and a church friend that live about an hour from each other in Missouri/Kansas. The trip takes about 12 hours so we made our first stop in St Louis where we visited the zoo. I will share our experience there on Wednesday’s post. After reading Grace’s post on Graceful Rags on how to pack a capsule wardrobe for a trip using a color theme, I decided to follow her example and chose a coral and navy theme for my wardrobe.

Our trip included outdoors and indoors activities and it turned out that the weather was actually more pleasant in Missouri than in Georgia!

Driving outfit #1 and zoo outfit

Since we wanted to take advantage of the free zoo in St Louis, we left at 4 am from Atlanta so we could arrive there around noon local time. I chose shorts and a cute top, trying my hand again at pattern mixing. My old coral sandals were comfortable for both the drive and the walking at the zoo (we visited and walked for 4 hours!).

I always wear a hat when outdoors for a while and keep my Amazon panama hat in the car.

Travel outfit day 2 and visiting

We only had 3 and 1/2 hours to reach my friend’s house so we headed to the zoo for another short stop as well as the turtle park accross the street then met her at her house for lunch. My new JCrew skirt was great for driving and even climbing into a turtle’s mouth! I still love my $8 heart tee from Ross!

Kaleidoscope and Crown Center, Kansas City

The trip was all about free outings and spending time with friends. We went to the pool but also headed into Kansas City for some art fun at Kaleidoscope and a little visit of the Clifford the big red dog exhibit at the Crown Center Mall.

I wore my shorts with a plain navy shirt this time. It is fun to create outfits using just a few pieces of clothing!

Nickel and Suede

Of course, I had to spend a little money at Nickel and Suede in Liberty since I was so close. And yes I went over budget. I was planning to buy 2 paris of earrings, and while I did buy only 2 pairs of earrings, I also bought 2 tees. My consolation is that I do I will wear them a lot and they are so comfortable and soft!

I did not keep to the navy theme with my olive joggers but I wasn’t sure if there would be mosquitoes and other annoying insects at my friend’s little home farm so I wanted to be prepared and opted for long pants.

I really do love this outfit combination! My thrifted shirt’s cost per wear but be getting close to pennies now and it probably won’t last much past another season! Going to be on the lookout for something similar. I find the print and the cut of the shirt very flattering!

Day 2 on the farm

I actually forgot to take pictures of the animals but my youngest loved the chilcken and the cows! We had to walk and find them several times a day. Then it was the cats. The dog, he did not like so much probably because it got a lot closer!

I wore my new Nickel and Suede tee and my joggers. My flip flops are a pair I found at Aldi a couple years ago. I have been surprised at how comfortable they are and how well they have been holding up. I do not wear flip flops much, usually just to the pool and the beach or to the mailbox but these were comfortable on our 2 mile walk on gravel and regular road. And those ball earrings I found a several months ago at Cracker Barrel: so perfect for so many outfits!

Time to go home!

After some wonderful friendship time, it was time to go home! I wore my JCrew skirt both days (we stopped after 8 hours drive) and changed my look with a different top.

Such a versatile skirt! Another great buy this summer! Which is great since I am on a budget freeze for the next couple of months! Looking forward to my $20 thrifting escapade in a couple weeks! Challenging myself to cut my spending is healthy for the environment and healthy for the budget!
