Lessons from summer travels
Since we traveled so much this summer I thought it would be interesting to come up with some lessons I learned from our travels.
I love traveling with my family
I love going abroad and while it is expensive, with a budget throughout a year or two and with connections and lodging where we travel, it is feasible for our family to travel! We love spending time together whether at the beach or the mountain or the capital town in the republic of Georgia!
I am willing to make sacrifices during the year for us to go on vacations. We spend less than others on birthdays and holidays, we do not have the latest car models and technology and we watch our spending. That does not mean that we live like paupers and never spend during the year but we do look at our budget and at our goals and make them work together.
Save more than you think you will spend
Most people and we are most people do spend more than they expect while vacationing. Maybe a few extra dinners out, an unexpected change in the car rental, buying more souvenirs, we typically end up spending a little more than planned. I usually have to tighten our belts after the summer because we go on a few extra outings and have to pay for those! So always plan to save a little extra! I am planning to take that into account for our next trips whether large or small!
Pack lightly and save space for gifts/souvenirs
I am a light packer but I feel like I could always have packed a few less items. Plan out everyone’s outfits and take into account what you plan to bring back. Add an extra small duffel bag to your suitcase for the extras you will bring back (I brought so many bags of herbs of Provence, mustard, chocolates and gifts we received in France that we had to buy one there).
My children are great travelers
This picture was taken at the St Louis Zoo after 8 hours of travel and getting up at 4 AM! We stayed at the zoo for about 3 to 4 hours before heading to our hotel to rest. My takeaway from traveling with the children this summer is to be very thankful that my children are good travelers. They adapted to time changes and jetlag, different food choices and different places and people. Not all children are like mine. I think part of it is that we have always traveled with them visiting grandparents, friends and places here and abroad from the time they were babies. I have traveled in the US solo with them by place and by car and I have learned what works for them (entertainment, snacks, sleep!). We still have them go to bed at regular school night time for the most part during the summer and while traveling and I think that makes a big difference in behavior and attitude. I also bring familiar snacks wherever we go because a hungry child quickly turns into an angry child. We look forward to our trips by counting down the days and coming up with activities to do during those trips (zoo are a top favorite!).

I’m pretty good adapting to time change when I get to the new place, it’s just coming home where I have trouble.

Yes, each time I learn something!

These are great tips. I had to buy a duffel bag once on vacation, and now I’m always sure to bring one along in the suitcase.

This is all so fantastic. And that’s awesome your kids are good travelers! Also, saving more than you think you’ll spend is a really good tip. There are some trips where we think we have it all figured out and then end up having a last-minute chance to do a dinner or tour or show…so it’s good to have a little padding just in case!

Yes, live and learn: save more. Won’t hurt to bring money back (it has only happened twice but it was a nice surprise!)

You’re so right about budgeting and planning to achieve your goals. Travel is indeed marvelous and less expensive gifts throughout the year can really make a difference
mimifce
yes, because expensive gifts really add up quickly!

We’ve always traveled with our kids too and found that having a familiar piece of home (like a stuffed toy or blanket) helped when they were young and we always tried to keep a somewhat normal-ish schedule. I definitely make saving for travel a priority with our family budget.

We are very similar in that way!

Great traveling tips. It definitely is important to budget and plan for more than you expect to spend. We do that too.

These are great takeaways! Such a good idea to have an extra bag for your souvenirs! I always pack way too much and need to get better about traveling lighter!

The more I travel, the less I bring but still am learning!

I, or we (my family) love to travel too. I agree with you that there is some budgeting and planning needed, as, when you add everything up it can work out a tad expensive. I think Cutting back on certain things can really make it a reality.

Yes, it is about priorities of where we want our money to go. Next year will be a lot less grand but we will do smaller trips here in the US so that we can save again for later!

We love the St. Louis zoo! 🙂 I am a member. We need to try to get my kids to travel to further places with us, I always opt for something easy with them like the beach or Disney. We’d love to take them to Europe or even Hawaii sometime soon since they’re 10 and 13 now. Love these photos!

That should be a fairly easy age to travel! And hopefully they would appreciate too! My oldest says he does not want to travel far for a while but he always does enjoy it. We will see what happens in the next few years. No big plans next year but just St Louis for our Spring break and then a couple trips visiting friends in the summer. We loved St Louis so much that we decided we need to spend a real vacation there.

Such a good tip to save more than you think you need- I”m guilty of not saving enough and then being like “oops!” ha! Thanks for making me think about that!
