Estuarium at Dauphin Island, AL
What is an estuarium? An estuarium is “a water passage where the tide meets a river current especially : an arm of the sea at the lower end of a river” (www.merriam-webster.com). While visiting Dauphin Island during our Thanksgiving vacation we visited the estuarium there which was a small aquarium focusing on animals and plants that live in the bay area. Before heading there, I checked for coupons for the admission fee and found discount tickets on Groupon which helped us save some money.
We took the ferry from Fort Morgan to the island which was a first for all of us I think: it was fun to drive the car on and then enjoy the ride from one of the areas that allow you to enjoy the view and fresh air.
I did not take many pictures at the estuarium. It is quite small but we did enjoy it. There was an area where you could touch and look at different things that you can find on a beach which was neat. I wish I had taken a picture of the tiger shrimp and the jellyfish!
There was a fun little play sand area at the entrance as well as a little trail.
Our favorites were by far the different rays in the touch pool and they were very friendly. There were several that would come up to be petted so we each had the opportunity to touch them and pet them.
The following picture was taken by my sister in law.
We had a good laugh on the way back home as we had parked the car in line waiting to load back up. There is a little spot next to the ferry where you can purchase snack, hot dogs and coffee and we went to grab something. The line to the ferry started moving as we were paying and we had to run back as we were holding up everyone else.
We did not got to the downtown area of Dauphin Island. Dauphin Island is 14 miles long and 2 miles wide therefore a pretty small island. We were in a hurry to catch that ferry back since everyone was hungry and many of the restaurants were closed because it was the off season. We hope to come back and explore in the future.
A bientôt!

Sounds like a fun place to visit. My family always enjoys the ray tanks, I keep my hands out of those 🙂

It looks like so much fun and I learned a new word, haha! Estuarium! 🙂 My kids would have loved this – they like seeing all the animals at Seaworld when we visit!
Hope that you’re having a great week 🙂 I had a fun day out shopping and a family birthday celebration dinner in the evening yesterday! 🙂

Nice! I am hoping to be more social in 2020. Since we moved to this little town, I have neglected getting together with friends. I had to look up the definition of estuarium, lol!

How very cool, Mireille! I love the giant turtle! My boys would love this! They have been asking about visiting an aquarium, but I don’t even know where the closest one is. Although we are planning a trip to Washington, DC in the spring so I’m sure we will find lots of fun places to visit while there!

We are planning a trip to DC in the summer! In the past we did the Smithsonian museums there. If I remember the museums are free and there are some great ones like an aviation one.
