Pascha Basket 2020
Christ is Risen!
Each year, the week prior to Pascha, I prepare different items to add to our Pascha Easter basket. Hop on over to last year’s post to see what our basket looked like (similar but different: I forgot which basket I had used then!). This year, the date of Pascha fell one week after western Easter.
We typically add items we did not eat during lent in our baskets: meat, dairy and eggs. We do not gorge ourselves once lent is over but do enjoy these treats in moderation in the weeks following lent.
Cheese Paskha
I usually make cheese Paskha with a couple of my friends but due to the quarantine, this year I made it on my own. I am glad I have been making this with friends for years now because I always need a reminder about the steps even if I have the recipe in front of me. No mishaps and mistakes this year! I show a few of the steps in the post mentioned above. Cheese Paskha is a festive cheese spread made of farmer’s cheese (or in my case drained cottage cheese), butter, egg/cream custard and vanilla. We will spread in on the sweet bread pictured below.
Egg Bread
I used a Greek recipe this year for my Easter bread and even though I forgot 1 of the 6 eggs, it turned out pretty well. I made some rinds and some braids.
Meat
I shared about an European meat market in Atlanta (Austell) last year. Patak meats is worth the drive with great prices and a wonderful selection of meats. It appears that they will be opening an online shop this summer which is great. My husband was able to make a quick stop so we have a few sausages to enjoy in the coming weeks.
Cheese and Eggs
The children decorated eggs using the Eggmazing spinning machine
for the 2nd time and enjoyed it so much I had to explain to my 2 year old that he couldn’t go into the fridge to get more eggs to decorate. I love that is is not mess. Eggs at church are traditionally boiled and stained red by boiling them in red onion skins. Eggs are a symbol of new life therefore a symbol of the resurrection.
I also bought several cheeses at Aldi and Kroger since they have a nice selection and good prices. I am sure I will be sharing some charcuterie board pictures on Instagram next week.
I forgot to add chocolates to the baskets but no worries, I picked some half off chocolate items after western Easter and we will be enjoying those too!
A bientôt!

Your basket looks amazing and very familiar to me, Mireille! We do the same thing in Russia and, of course, our icons are the most important piece of it. Usually, I always had a basket with food, very similar to yours, and went to church for Pascha’s night service on the night from Saturday to Sunday. It was one of my most favorite Russian tradition.

You should see the crowds at our last church at Pascha in normal years! The church would be filled!

Everything looks so good, Mireille. I’d like to try the cheese paskha. I really like the idea of dyeing eggs in natural things, too.

I have friends who are really good at dying them different colors with different natural things. Pretty cool!

This is a great tradition. I’ve never heard of it before :/ The cheese looks amazing and the bread turned out so pretty! I can’t wait to see what you do in the way of a charcuterie board. What cool eggs! If I were still coloring eggs with the girls (only one of them is still coloring eggs with her little one…the rest are way to grown now), I’d definitely need one of the spinners!

I think it is an Orthodox tradition so you will see a lot of Easter European and Greek orthodox doing this as well as other Orthodox churches.
