Zoo Atlanta: the Elephants

We ended our summer with a bang: the last week before school started I took the boys to both Zoo Atlanta and the Georgia aquarium. We have been to both before but it had been probably 2 to 3 years since we had been to the zoo and longer for the aquarium. We did not pack our lunch this time, only snacks and waters but I did buy the membership since it was only 15 dollars more than the price of admission for the 5 of us.

The main thing that has been added in the past few years in the African Savanna area where the elephants have a bigger enclosure with several seated viewing areas. The walkway takes you to a cool elephant sculpture.

Having been to several great zoos (our favorites are the St Louis Zoo and the Jacksonville Zoo), we are always a little underwhelmed with the zoo in Atlanta which is fairly small but it does pack a nice variety of animals for its size. I actually had forgotten about the bird show which we did not do this time which is a really nice presentation. It is interesting though how the more you see the harder it is to be impressed: as we were discussing other zoos, we heard a lady and her son discussing how Zoo Atlanta was so much nicer than their zoo!

The elephants were by far our favorites this visit and that is what I mostly took pictures of. I told my friend that in the first picture, the elephant was giving us a blogger pose with its legs just so!

We were pleased that the elephant took the time to eat while we were trying to photograph it: any action is fun to watch!

The tip of the trunk is just like fingers. It is really cool to watch how it would grab the hay from the ground too.

The black rhino has moved into the elephant’s old enclosure which makes it so much easier to see. The boys and I wondered how often he and the elephants get hosed down as you can only see the red clay dirt on them!

My 10 year old’s favorite is the red panda and he was right there waiting for his picture to be taken. He has a little air conditioned area but intead of going in it, there he was in the tree panting. He had a nice shaded area though and that is one of my favorite features for this zoo: most of it is shaded which makes a summer visit much more pleasant. Other animals that we really enjoy seeing there are the orangoutans, the komodo dragon and the pandas. The new reptile building which opened in 2015 is also really nice. Since we knew we would be back we did skip it this visit.

A bientôt!

My son’s favorite is the red panda too; he even dressed like one for halloween once. We’ve never been to the Atlanta zoo but our local zoo is fiarly small and manages to pack in a wide variety of animals too.

I loved the blogger pose on the first elephant, haha! I love zoos, and it’s been too long since I visited one. My favorite zoo is the Henry Doorly Zoo in Omaha; if you get the chance, check it out!

It looks like you had a very fun time! Elephants are always fun to watch. I loved seeing the red panda sleeping in the tree…such a cute face!

My grandchildren enjoy our Denver Zoo. I think the most amazing zoo that I have ever visited was the Bronz Zoo in NYC.

I think I will make a larger print of the panda picture for my son’s room. I had forgotten we have visited one zoo in NY but it was the Central Park.

It’s so smart to get a membership so you can pop over for a short time and not worry about wasting money. We did that with the botanical garden and the art museum!!
Love that the elephant was practicing his poses, LOL

I am sure we will get our money’s worth! My friend has one to the botanical gardens so we will plan a couple outings in the fall hopefully.

Oh, the Red Panda is sooooo cute!! We were supposed to see one on our last zoo trip in Indianapolis but it wasn’t there 🙁
This does look like a really nice zoo and I can imagine the kids had so much fun! I too feel like the more we see things the less we are impressed.

It is always nice when the animals are in a spot where you can really admire them. Our favorite experience is still the Feline Park we went to in France where there was an island where the lemur walk free: it was so neat!

We love the St. Louis Zoo, but we live here! Surpringtly, we usually get a membership and go several times a month during the summer and we only went 1 time last year (Covid) and this summer we haven’t gone at all! I think it is because my kids are getting older and are into whatever tween/teens like to do! If it wasn’t so hot here this week, I would have prob tried to plan one trip there! That is a great photo of the red panda!

The heat definitely makes a difference in a visit: at least the Atlanta one has a lot of shade: but I do remember that was not the case in St Louis!

My husband and I love to visit area zoos when we travel, we’ve never been to the Atlanta one though. It looks amazing!

Animals can be so interesting to observe them. I usually am in too much in a hurry to see everything at a zoo so this was a good visit.
