Advent Activities and a Date Night Look
Oftentimes when on vacation with some time on my hands I like to plan ahead. It might be meal planning, activity planning or planning for another vacation. During our vacation at the beach, I decided that I want to change up our advent calendar this year by adding service activities to our craft projects. I am trying to stress the real meaning of Christmas/Nativity to the children which is celebrating the birth of Christ as well as fostering the children’s empathy and spirit of giving.
I sat with the boys one morning to get some input and ideas from them (both crafts and things that would be helpful to others) and added to those ideas with some of my ideas. The calendar at the end is our list and the finished product was written on colorful cardstock strips that I filled our calendar with (which was made by my talented friend Veronique years ago as a gift).
As I am realizing with my children as they grow older, being unselfish does not always come naturally and we need to help them think of others. This is one way to do that! We started by stopping by a church on Wednesday to donate a new jacket and today, we will be shopping for the child we picked on the Salvation Army angel tree at church. Each child will choose one of the items.
Since my children typically do not have a lot of chores during the school week, one of the things I added to the calendar was “free chores”. Doing a chore to help me out benefits all of us: I get help and they help someone without expecting a reward.
I wore this outfit for a date night with my hubby at the beach and had my oldest babysit his brothers. We enjoyed a delicious meal at Cafe 30A and since our reservation was early, we were able to take advantage of their B1G1 half off entrees. I bought this dress online at Walmart last year and my booties are quite old and in need of an update but I love the low shaft and am hanging on to them until I find the perfect pair to replace them.
I am leaving you with our calendar and list of activities. Are you or did you do something similar with your kids when they were younger?
A bientôt!

We did do similar things with our boys when they were younger. Our karate school usually adopted a family and we’d pick a few angels from the local giving tree to buy presents for as well as dropping off some unused/ unopened toys at Toys for Tots. We’d also put one “fun” activity in our advent calendar each day as well as buying them a chocoalte advent calendar.

Yes! The oldest doesn’t participate as much but trying to make sure we do it with the other 3.

This is the part I love. Preparing, getting ideas and putting it all together. Lovely dress Mirielle xx

You are so good with the boys Mireille. Teaching them to think of others is so wonderful.
Love the date night outfit. It’s nice to spend alone time with our spouses (you’d think we would have tons of that time since we don’t have kids, but we have mom and Lesley, haha)

We didn’t really “celebrate” Advent that much at our house then. My kids were involved in many church activities designed to help others. I’m sure there were more if I’d taken the time to find them. You are such an awesome mom to actively seek out ways (and include your boys while doing so).
Your date night outfit is lovely, too! I hope you had a wonderful time!

It’s not really an Orthodox tradition but it is a nice to focus on others so I am taking advantage of the season to do that with the boys. They really need to work on that lol!

Thanks, Amy. So far the boys are enjoying it.

Love your date night look! A really pretty dress. I rarely find things at Walmart because I am petite and even their size XS doesn’t fit me well.
Your Advent time acitivities list is wonderful!

I haven’t shopped much there even though I have seen many bloggers find great pieces!

that dress is so cute on you and I love the ankle boots with it! perfect for autumn, love this boho style!
Your kindness list is a great one too! We have been regularly donating to the toy drive here each Christmas, we go to the store and shop with a kid each in mind, and now we have the boys with us they participate too. It has been tricky in past years trying to explain to toddlers why we are leaving the toy they bought behind in the donation box instead of taking it home, but it got easier over the years, haha!

I can imagine! Last year, I did that without my just then barely 3 year old. They are enjoying the activities so far.

What a great idea for an Advent calendar! I admittedly have never had service projects in my calendar, but one of my favorite ways to volunteer when I was younger was to sing Christmas carols with my music class at the local shelter. I always prefer the religious songs but it was a special way to spend an evening either way! Also, I absolutely love this dress. You look so cute and that bangle is the perfect accessory.
Thanks for joining my linkup!

Thanks, Grace! The boys grumble a little about dropping off the items but it is good for them! This week we need to work on making cards and notes for neighbors and the retirement center.
