Grandfather Mountain, NC
The week after Christmas we took a short vacation in North Carolina and per usual planned some outdoor adventures. First on the agenda was snow tubing which was really fun despite the warm winter and it not being natural snow. Next was a hike at Linville Gorge (see post here). On our 2nd day we visited Grandfather Mountain. All of these places were chosen from my internet search for things to do near Morganton, NC where we had booked our hotel.
The day was windy and a little windy but not especially too cold. After being unprepared for one hike in the fall. I now keep extra windbreakers and hats in the car and we did take advantage of them during this visit. It was fairly busy as everyone was on Christmas break but as it was an outdoor advantage we were pretty comfortable. We passed by people on the trail and some areas like the bridge and top rocks I just tried to pass quickly by people.
We chose not to park at the top where the swinging bridge is but at a lower level which had access to a fairly short hike to the top. It was not streneous but since the rocks were wet, I made sure to hold my youngest’s hand while we walked. I really enjoyed the natural stone steps and the moss. Grandfather Mountain is a state park and the highest peak on the eastern part of the Blue Ridge Mountaisn.
The park boasts a swinging bridge which according to the website is America’s highest suspension bridge. We booked our tickets for Grandfather Mountain online and enjoyed our experience enough that we would like to return in nicer weather to have a picnic and explore more trails.
The views from the swinging bridge were quite beautiful! My oldest 3 boys and their dad went to the top rock in the first picture where you see all the people but I was not comfortable doing that with my 4 year old. Slips and accidents can happen and I felt more comfortable on the bridge and next to it.
I can really imagine a movie like the Lord of the Rings being filmed in such landscape. So beautiful and a little ethereal!
The park had several neat rock formations as well as a nature center preserve with local rescued animals and a museum. There were a couple gift shops and a variety of trails of different levels to hike. We really enjoyed our visit!
A bientôt!

Lovely photos and it’s good to know that this is in and around the Blue Ridge Mountains as I’ve heard of those in that iconic song, the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia!
Always like seeing your photos which tell of a different US from the regular tourist trail 😊

I love sharing about all the pretty places around here (well this is 5 hours away) just as much as I enjoy seeing where people live in their countries.

This is such beautiful country — great photos! We took our 3 grandsons camping and hiking in and around Chimney Rock State Park (NC) last summer. It was a wonderful trip. Thanks for sharing your trip to Grandfather Mountain.

What a gorgeous hike. I’m glad you were careful with the little one. When we were exploring the Grand Canyon, it was crazy how far people would walk out with their kids.

I know! There is no reason to not be cautious. Still pretty views while being safe.

I’m going to add this to my list of places to visit someday. I love the Blue Ridge Mountains. They are gorgeous! We’ve never hiked there, and I’m not sure I could talk Nigel into it now. But, I can always dream (or visit your blog and live vicariously through you)!

We can go to closer spots in the Blue Ridge and the Great Smokey mountains (a couple to 3 hours away and just do some short overnight trips to visit more of it!

Wonderful photos Mirielle , a beautiful spot for a getaway. Wise not to take your little one to the top . Not sure I will ever make it back to the U.S. so always enjoy seeing interesting places.

You all do a great job at getting out in nature and taking your boys on adventures! We used to do that, too. Our kids today are nature deprived!

They don’t always like it when we go on hike but they usually warm up to the idea.

A fascinating landscape. I love mossy stones too. I’m not sure I would walk on the suspension bridge with my vertigo! Thanks for linking

Looks like a lovely holiday! I don’t blame you for being cautious with your 4 year old. You were just a couple of hours from us. 😄

I realized that. I first we were planning to go closer to Asheville and maybe visit the Biltmore estate but when I saw the price, we changed our plans.
