The Food in Costa Rica
When we visit a country, we like to eat the local food. So as soon as we arrived to Costa Rica, we knew we want to eat local food for lunch. As we left the car rental place, we asked for a recommendation to a local inexpensive restaurant and we were direct to a local Soda place nearby. In Costa Rica, small restaurants are called Soda and this one was just few minutes away. The one thing you will notice in our typical Costa Rican meals is the common theme of rice and beans.
At this Soda, fruit juice was included so we got to taste guava juice, tamarind juice and one other that I cannot remember what fruit is was made of. The food was tasty and inexpensive by our standards: we paid about $16 total for our meals. I am sure this same fare would be cheaper outside of this area of San Jose.
I did not take pictures of the different bowls of ceviche, we ate that first night at the resort but it was delicious. We also ordered tuna tartare and a dulce de leche dessert.
Our meals also included fried plantains and a salad as you can see in the above plate. This was one of the meals on our excursion: meals came included in our tours. This time, rice was mixed with the chicken and this was my favorite meal of our trip.
Breakfast was very tasty at Tulemar resort and the views from the restaurant awe inspiring. The first morning we saw a toucan and 2 macaws!
On the way back to the city, we indulged in these sweet treats that wore sold by vendors on the highway near the tolls. I cannot believe that would walk through traffic to sell their ways. These were good but pretty sweet.
In San Jose, we stayed at the Hilton Gran Hotel which is very pretty and sophisticated. The food was expensive and not nearly as good as the local food we ate. Since we are Diamond Members with Hilton, we did have free happy hour drinks and free breakfast and used points for our stay. The location was central to the city but in the future we would not stay at this particular location since we like the wild areas better.
Breakfast at the hotel offered typical Costa Rican fare so of course that is what I chose! It was very good: I had a tamale each morning there and enjoyed the plantains and fried tortilla. Something did disagree with my husband’s stomach the full day of the trip but we are not sure what since I didn’t have any problems. Could have been too much coffee, water (even though we drank bottled water) or the rice and beans. But we both loved the food here and are excited at the prospect of introduce it to our children.
A bientôt!

That looks like a delicious week; though I would have struggled a bit as I really do not like beans at all.

The food looks incredible, Mireille! We struggle these days, since we became vegan because so few places cater for our needs! But it won’t stop us travelling! It just means we usually need to carry some kind of staple with us, just in case lol!

Makes sense: kind of like when my kids were little and I would pack a few things I would knew they would eat. I think thankfully there are a lot more vegan options nowadays.
