A Field trip to a Local Nature Preserve
A few weeks ago, I accompanied my son on a school field trip. Of course, I didn’t read the email fully and ended up at the wrong place, but thankfully both locations were in our town so I only wasted a total of 30 minutes. I arrived at the nature preserve 15 minutes late. The children were listening to a presentation about animals that live in the preserve and nearby, about composting and how in the preserve, nothing was touched. Then the fun part of the field trip happened which was a hike of about 1.5 miles.
The hike was somewhat hilly and mostly circled a large pond. There were signs of beavers near the water and we also saw a beaver’s dam.
It was the first time I had seen that big of a beaver mark on a large tree. Sadly, we did not see any beaver but they were probably frightened by all of the noise the children made.
One area of the pond ran into a creek and the water was really clear. Another part was very marsh-like and we looked at the different vegetation. We only saw a couple of geese and birds on our walk.
I wore my thrifted red jacket which kept me warm and comfortable. This was one of the last colder days and the 2nd day of spring.
I looked up the difference between a lake and a pond and there is really no difference. I think most people call small lakes, ponds. When looking at the picture above, I would call the pond a lake.
The hike ended at a replica of a bald eagle’s nest. Now this was impressive: the size of a bald eagle’s nest is incredible. My son’s whole class fits in it! This was really interesting to me as there is a bald eagle’s nest at Berry College which is about an hour from where we live. I never would have imagined that it would be this large.
So that is my bit of new knowledge I am sharing with you today! Bald eagle’s nests are humonguous!
A bientôt!

WOW. That eagle’s nest. How incredible is that?
At least you still made it to the trip. I would have been so annoyed with myself.

Yes, I would have been upset if I hadn’t made it.

That bald eagle’s nest replica is fascinating! I didn’t realize they were so big! The photos are beautiful. I’ve never seen a beaver’s teeth marks either!

We all learned something everyday!

It was a pretty hike.

That sounds like such a fun outing! We have lots and lots of beavers near where we live so we often see huge trees with beaver markings on them (and some that they manage to fell but can’t move!). I have seen other replicas of bald eagle nests and I always wonder how I can’t see the nest in the trees for the pair we have nearby when it is SO large! They cammoflage them so well I guess.

That is a good point. Maybe it is so big we can figure out it is a nest!

An interesting and informative hike, hopefully everyone enjoyed themselves! Spring weather can be a bit hit and miss all over the world it seems.

It sure is! We have gotten a lot of rain here but the pretty days are gorgeous.

I had no idea Bald Eagles’ nests are so large! Looks like a great day! It’s amazing to me that beaver can gnaw through a tree that way. Cool jacket! And a great outfit.

I was flabbergasted! It’s amazing how large they are.

It’s amazing how that tree is still standing! I’ve often wondered about the difference between lakes and ponds. In the forest near I live there are more than 10 ponds and one of them is big enough in my mind to be a lake.
mimifce
Wow! That is a lot of ponds in one forest!

A walk that was not only engaging but also educational; I hope that everyone had fun!

Yes! Being outdoors is perfect in spring: we have had some wonderful weather these last few days: not too hot!

I have surprised myself with not having bought anything so far. I just had found so many things that I haven’t had a chance to wear them all. The dresses I have thrifted have been perfect.
