Mistico Arenal Hanging Bridge, Costa Rica
One of the places I wanted to visit in the La Fortuna area was this park with hanging bridges. We did not visit the waterfall that is well known (La Fortuna Waterfall) as I wasn’t sure how busy it would be and I wanted to feel more like a local than a tourist. That is one of the reason we did not eat in town but at the resort and the roadside sodas.
We had wonderful weather for this outing and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. I always worry about how the children will react to walking for a couple of hours but the hanging bridges and wildlife kept it interesting.
One of my 5 year olds’ concerns was the hanging bridges and I am happy to report that he was able to walk each of these without even holding my hand. The bridges are secure but did do sway from side to side if you do not walking in the middle of them.
This is the first wildlife we saw. I am not sure if the bird is eating a small crab or a spider but my guess would be a spider.
We were so excited to see spider monkeys! The only species we did not see on our trip was squirrel monkeys.
See that little yellow snake? On the right is a blurry enlarged picture of it. That is a jumping pit viper, yes, I said, jumping! It is very venomous and as this was a little one, even more dangerous as the young snake will let out all of its venom as it does not know yet how to control it. We were advised not to get too close to the ramp (he was on the other side of the trail behind the ramp and not that close).
Such an interesting tree: the walking palm moves closer to the sun by taking out its roots and growing new ones. It moves about 2 inches a year!
This walk (about 2 miles with 16 bridges (10 hanging), a tunnel and a waterfall offered beautiful views and was mostly shaded.
Mistico Hanging Bridge was a great choice for our outing and just around $100 for our whole family. I did my research about the choices for our expeditions several months ahead of our trip, deciding following a number of criterias including prices, difficulty and location from our resorts.

Wow, that hanging bridge is fabulous. And that monkey! What a great photo. I am scared to dead for snakes though.

There were 6 of those bridges: it was really cool!

That sounds like an incredible outing; though I would have been nervous crossing the hanging bridges. I hate when bridges move as I’m walking on them (and my family has far too much fun trying to make it move even more on me!).

I was so surprised my youngest was not afraid!

Gosh, what a fabulous activity. The boys learn so much from these adventures I bet.

I am sure you can say there for an affordable price, especially if you rent a place vs staying at a resort. It sure is a beautiful country.

This looked like a wonderful trip…until the snake…a venomous snake even! They scare the bejeebers out of me. But, I love the idea of walking on a hanging bridge! Thanks for sharing these photos (I didn’t look at the ones of the snake).

That snake was so tiny (but deadly). He was smaller than the palm of my hand and at least 5 feet away I would say.
