Another Day, Another Hike
We are definitely slowing down on the hiking front as the weather is getting warmer and more humid: not fun to go out there with 4 kids when everyone is sweating bullets! This particular hike a couple weeks ago was really fun because it was short (as promised to my boys) and because we actually had never walked it. It follows the lakeshore for a while offering some pretty views.
While a short 1 mile hike does not offer as much exercise as a longer hike, it offers opportunities for taking one’s time to observe nature.
See the frog? My 9 year old noticed it as we walked by. This was a fun walk for noticing little things!
Then my oldest noticed the spider on a tree. After that, we were all really intent on seeing what else we could notice: we saw small ladybugs on leaves, squirrels climbing trees: it was fun!
The boys love skipping rocks and well as throwing rocks in the water. We spent some time just doing that. We talked and soaked in our surroundings.
One of the things all of these hikes have taught me is to not always have a rigid plan. It is not always about how far you go and what your plan is but it is about enjoying the little moments.
I really enjoy these times with my boys! I am very thankful that they all still walk with me even with the occasionnal complaint and whine.
Isn’t the water cool? We’ve been trying to figure out why it looks great like that certain spots? Is it all the trees, the shallowness of water? Whatever it is, we love how it looks!
I am going to miss our hikes this summer but we will be taking advantage of the pool for exercise. I am sure we will have the occassional walk on a cool day but we will get back to regular hikes in the fall.
What do you all do outdoors in the summer when it is too hot for much?

When it’s really hot, I take Reika to the beach.

Beach is 4 hours away but the river is close. Just not many spots where you can just dip your toes. We could go to the lake though!

Definitely harder! Tomorrow planning lunch at the pool with snow cones: we got rained out today and decided to postpone our fun.
