Fort Morgan, Alabama
Last year, when we traveled to Fort Morgan, we did not do much more than sit and play on the beach. This year we planned a few outings. One of my favorites turned out to be visiting Fort Morgan.
Construction on Fort Morgan began in 1819 and took 15 years to complete! Sadly the labor for this project was slaves as the government made a slave lease contract with owners in the region. The longest period of military occupation at the fort was during the Coat Artillery era from 1898 to 1923. The fort was also used during WWII as an ordnance depot.
While this fort is not as well maintained as Fort Gaines accross the bay on Dauphin Island, I loved the architecture and wildness of this fort much more. Having traveled to different countries that have centuries old history and structures, and visited a number of places in the US too, sometimes it takes a lot to impress me. Well, Fort Morgan impressed me. The fort is large, overlooking the bay and the arches were what I loved the most.
There is something about a succession of arches and we went at the end of the day when the lighting was at its best.
There were stalagmites and stalagtites forming under many of these arches from the lime and water dripping.
I took so many pictures during our visit and since the Fort and park closed at 5 pm, we had to make the most of our hour and a half we were there.
The sunset over the bay was gorgeous with its shades of pink and we took a few imprompu pictures there.
It is always nice when my 2 year old stands still long enough for me to get a good shot!
So there is was, a little photo exploration of Fort Morgan! If you are ever in the area, carve out a couple of hours in your day to explore it!
A bientĂ´t!

I take that as a great compliment coming from you Lindsey as you always take amazing pictures. I really need to use my camera instead of relying on my phone to take pictures. Thanks! I was very happy to get some great pics of my boys on this trip!

Very neat! We enjoy touring forts too; they are so filled with history and it’s neat to imagine what it must have been like to live there.

Yes, that is why I like when we go to the pioneer villages where there are people in the dress of the area explaining what different people did.

I have a childhood memory of my parents taking us to a fort that looked very much like this one. I have asked my mom where the fort was but she doesn’t remember the trip at all. Thought I had finally solved the mystery here with your post til I realized this fort is in Alabama. And I feel pretty certain the fort we visited was in New England or New York. Beautiful pictures. Glad you enjoyed your visit.

There are many of these forts along the Atlantic coast. This summer I hope to stop in Williamsburg on our way to DC.
