Recreating Past Outfits with some Tweaks
Today, Jodie and I are sharing some past outfits that we were not all the way in love with (for whatever reasons) and reworking them! You will probably see more creativity with Jodie’s outfits, but I am working with outfits I still had pictures of, and that I feel I would not wear again exactly the same way. Sometimes, I can give new life to an item in my closet by tweaking an outfit or by making some changes to that piece. Other times, my style just has changed enough that I want to re-imagine an outfit to fit my style now. Here are my examples!
Mustard Dress and Burgundy
I have had this mustard dress for a little over 3 years now and I have come to realize that I like this shade of mustard better on my bottom half instead of near my face. I first shared it in a blog post here and have worn it some of the years, but haven’t reached for it much recently, so this winter, I decided to give it a whirl once more, but wearing it as a skirt. I first just wore the sweater over the dress, but the collar still showed, so I ended up tucking the bodice of the dress in the waistband, and because over the lines of the skirt of the dress, it is not noticeable. I love the results and will try this again with other sweaters. There is technical nothing wrong with the first outfit, but I really do love the dress more as a skirt.
Tunic Dress transformed into a Cropped Shirt
Again, there is nothing wrong with this plaid tunic dress as a dress. It was adorable in this Thanksgiving post just as a dress, but I haven’t worn it like that since then. The length is a little short and while I have worn it open over pants or buttoned like here, I wasn’t reaching for it the past 2 years. So this fall, I took a pair of scissors to it to create a cropped light jacket. Today, I am recreating this combo wearing the same shoes, but a different pair of denim.
Sequin Skirt Outfit
Since I didn’t love the cream sequin skirt, I returned it after writing this post and bought the brown sequin skirt a week or so later. I decided to recreate the outfit with only switching the scarf and of course wearing the sequin skirt I kept. It doesn’t look much different in the pictures apart from the contrast in color, but the fit of the skirt is very different: my brown sequin skirt is more tapered and has a slit on the side which I like much more.
Short Sleeve Sweatshirt
I have worn this short sleeve sweatshirt several times (I thrifted it last summer in Arizona) and I think I like this outfit, but maybe not the picture so much. Anyways, I decided to recreate it with a different pair of pants to see if I liked it more. I think both work well. I have noticed that I get more critical of pictures when I am ready for a haircut: so I am heading to my friend’s today for a trim and color.
My examples show you how if you are not satisfied with how an outfit turns out (for whichever reasons), don’t throw the whole outfit out the window, but make a few changes and see what you think. I do find though that for me, if I try over and over, and nothing makes me like an outfit, it might be that the item that is giving me problems just needs to find a new home. I do not do big purges in my closet, but I do reevaluate things every so often especially if it something I try on and take off to wear another day, but don’t reach for again. In these examples though, I was able to give new life to all of these pieces. Don’t forget to stop by Jodie’s blog post!

CAn’t sew so those zigzag scissors are becoming my best friend for my “alterations”.

Again.. that was brilliant to cut that shirt dress and make it cropped.
And I love that you haven’t given up on these. Items, but instead try different ways to make them work…. except the skirt, but I totally understand that.

Hi hi! If I am going to may more than thrift store price, I definitely make sure it’s a keeper.

Nice outfits dear Michelle, I especially like the one of the first picture. You must have an enormous big wardrobe 🙂

It’s definitely American size, but not gigantic. Spacious and I keep it organized!

A pair of zigzag scissors! That’s a good one. Haven’t seen one of those in decades!

They were my MIL and they might even have been her mom’s so definitely old!

How clever you are. Esp the cropped shirt dress. Fabulous!

I already wore that plaid more this year than last just because I cut it!

Well done on restyling items you are not wearing . The mustard dress works so well as a skirt with the red. Mustard can be such a tricky colour against the skin. Cropping the long shirt was a clever idea and looks so good.

Yes, I have had mustard colors that I have found I liked and others just don’t work as well.

I really love the changes you made, especially for the first one.

I really like your mustard dress and the flowers on it. I think it’s a very smart idea to wear it as a skirt!

I really liked it that way.

Great tweaks Mireille, you really know how to stretch your wardrobe pieces! I frequently view the pictures of my outfits on my blog, and easily see other ways to style the outfit next time. I wear a lot of dresses, so I use the layer over a dress formula to change a dress up. quite a bit. Thanks for sharing these great recreations. Hope you have a good weekend!

Yes, the sharing of my outfits does get the creative juices flowing.

Modifying clothing if you don’t sew can feel intimidating, so I like that you just grabbed the zigzag scissors and got to work instead of overthinking it! The mustard dress/”skirt” with red looks fab.

It really has worked out well with everything I used them for so far!
