My closet: then and now
In the past month, I have been in a purging mode even more than usual. In an attempt to curb my shopping, I am shopping my closet. I have realized over the past year that less is oftentimes more. Having an organized, uncluttered closet allows you to see what you have. I am very lucky to have a large walk in closet that I do not have to share. It is large enough that I do not use all of the hanging space.
I wanted to share some pictures of what my closet looked like in March of last year in an earlier post called Finding Inspiration for Outfits. My closet doesn’t look very different now but I did change the locations of several things, got rid of some clothes and bought some new clothes. Because I have purged the clothes that I really didn’t like much or didn’t wear, I probably have the same amount of clothes. However, now I really love or like the items that have made it through the purging.
This part of the closet looks very similar. I have added a couple cardigans and some shirts as well as some vests. Sharing my daily outfits on Instagram is my outfit diary. It reminds me about certain pieces, helps me create new combinations or reminds me that I really like certain pieces. It also helps me realize what doesn’t work!
I have added a couple jackets (for some reason they are my weakness) but have gotten rid of several purses. As I decide whether an item stays or goes, I am learning more about my style and my dislikes. I do not like bags that are too large or unstructured (I have a couple totes but they are structured). I prefer crossbody purses because they practical with children. I also really do not like how button down shirts look like on me. I am larger chested and either they are too small and pull accross the chest or are too baggy and add weight to my frame. I have kept only a few plaid shirts that I like to wear as layers and gave my 2 chambray/denim shirts to my mom.
I moved the boots to another part of the closet and put my straw baskets under my shoes. I love my new straw baskets! Two are from France and I will get a few more next time we go! I have added several pairs of shoes since last year and really haven’t gotten rid of any. What can I say? I like shoes! I am seeing a pattern of buying better quality shoes that are a little more expensive but as I am realizing with my cost per wear spreadsheet: it is worth spending the extra money if I really love them and if I will wear them for several years to come.

Such a feeling of accomplishment.

Thought you might be interested in shelf dividers that clip onto the coated wire shelving. They keep my sweaters in stacks and keep my purses standing up. I have had mine for 5 years or so, and the newer ones are a different design, so I can’t speak for how well the newer design works. The link below is just one example; there are multiple sellers/brands on line. Make sure to get the ones for wire shelving; there are similar ones that only work on wooden shelves. https://www.amazon.com/Neatly-Made-Dividers-Closet-Organization/dp/B07VRT17QC/ref=sr_1_1_sspa?crid=16OCI8ZX81L7K&keywords=wire+shelf+dividers+for+wire+shelves&qid=1579873400&s=home-garden&sprefix=wire+shelf+difiders%2Cgarden%2C178&sr=1-1-spons&psc=1&spLa=ZW5jcnlwdGVkUXVhbGlmaWVyPUEySllYUVRVRU9ZUzQ1JmVuY3J5cHRlZElkPUEwNTAyMDU3MjRUNFhNQlRETUVSSSZlbmNyeXB0ZWRBZElkPUEwMTY4ODQ5QkdHUU04OFdXVjNQJndpZGdldE5hbWU9c3BfYXRmJmFjdGlvbj1jbGlja1JlZGlyZWN0JmRvTm90TG9nQ2xpY2s9dHJ1ZQ==

Thanks Patti! It definitely helps me really think before making a purchase.

It really has helped me think about what I want to buy and when. No more impulse buys hopefully!

This makes me want to go through my closet right now! Closet goals, friend!

Do it! I am amazed how much more I wear what I have and how I want less now that all I have I actually have. Will be helping a friend with her closet next week.

Go for it! Will be helping a friend with her closet next week.

Great pictures and how wonderful that you have such a nice big closet all to yourself!
I too prefer crossbody bags for the convenience. Oh, and I don’t think I own a button down shirt, they just don’t feel like “me”, however my daughter purchased a plaid one recently from Target and since she’s pretty much my size, I was thinking about trying it on for a future fashion post 🙂

I am keeping my 3 but they definitely don’t get much wear. I will see which purses get axed in the next couple of months. Just don’t want to keep what I don’t use.
mimifce
I really don’t wear mine unless I kind of force myself to. As for my purses, I think a couple will be donated by summer.
Danielle
I love what you did with your closet. It looks really good.

Thank you, Danielle.

I couldn’t agree more that you should spend a little more for quality. I hope to shop my closet more this year. Thanks for the inspiration!

Oh I love it! Well done! So organized. I share my current closet with my husband and he is so much neater and more organized than me! And we BOTH have a ton of shoes, lol.

My husband’s closet is not as well organized but it is almost as big. We lucked out when moving into this house. 4 out 5 bedrooms have walk in closets!

I purged so much from my closet recently. I’ve found it’s easier to get dressed with less!

Yes!! I have found the exact same thing: less is more and I am having more fun with my clothes now that I love everything in there!
Carrie @ Curly Crafty Mom
Your closet is way more organized than mine! I try to organize mine twice a year (warm months and cool months) and that helps a lot. I love how you have your shoes organized.

Thank you! The way the shelving was organized made it easy for me to use the space wisely. Having all the shoes on those shelves is pretty practical.
jodie filogomo
I definitely need to get purging. For some reason I love everything in my closet right now so it’s hard.
I’m always trying to find more ways to get more room for my shoes, so I use dividers if there’s room between the shelves. And I turn one shoe forward and the other one backwards which gives me more space.

It’s hard if you actually love everything in your closet. For me there were some things that needed to go because I would put them on and always take them off. Maybe you need to do the rule of one in, one out. Or get new closet space, lol!

Oh my goodness I LOVE seeing closet photos, especially before and afters! That’s the best to have such a big, walk in closet. And you’re so right, shopping your closet is the best. I’m trying my best to do that too! Keep up the great work!

It really helps that I have so much space so things are not squashed together so I really know what I have. And I really have been good the last 2 months to get rid of things I don’t especially like: another purse made it to the donation pile last week.

I love to reorganize and purge closets. Great job!

Thanks, Amy! I love it too, it’s fun!
Jess
Very jealous of all your closet space! I need to do some serious purging myself.
mimifce
I am very lucky to have so much space. And lately with less things, I really see what I have better which has made wear some clothes I hadn’t in a really long while.

It looks so good! We have been decluttering around here, too.

Mireille, I love that you were able to clean out your unwanted items to make room for things that you love. Your closet looks great! I would be seriously terrified to share photos of what my closet looks like right now. It is an absolute disaster beyond your wildest nightmares!

If I lived close by I would offer my help and help you tackle it. Alas, I live accross the country! But I will help my friend tackle hers tomorrow and will think of you! If you move down south, I will just be a couple hours away =)

You’re awesome! If I move down south, I had better clean the closet before I move ALL the stuff! Hahaha.
