Boys room updates

My 9 year old and my 6 year old share a room. Over the past couple of months, I have made it a priority to declutter our house from top to bottom. I went through the boys toys and after using some of their wall decor they had outgrown in their litte brother’s room, I decided to gave their room a little facelift.

My first step was to declutter the top of their shelves: all of those souvenirs and treasure box prizes found a permanent home you know where. I kept their trophies and some pretty souvenirs that would be easy to lift to dust the shelves and dresser.

Reading corner

As a remnant of my teaching days and my degree in Reading and Literacy, books hold an important place in our house. Over the years I have gotten rid of books but also bought more books. This is most of our picture book collection. One or 2 of the cubbies have non fiction picture books. I really decluttered the top of these shelves and I am so happy with the simplicity of the look. I really like the two artifcial plants from Target.

The boys artwork is framed in cheap colorful frames from Ikea.

Beds

I bought some grey sheets and grey comforters from Target. Since the boys do not use any top sheets, I saved money by only buying 2 fitted sheet and one set of 2 pillowcases. The comforters were on sale for $15.99 and they are reversible with the underside being a lighter grey color.

Under the bed the 3 flat containers hold all of the boys legos. We have quite a collection from when my oldest enjoyed building sets but a lot of them have come apart. In the corner is another reading or resting nook which the boys really don’t use much.

Toy storage

To coordinate colors I replaced the colorful bins in this shelf with grey ones (I used the other ones in their closet and brother’s room). The bins hold small stuffed animals, toy and a few games. The 2 plaid baskets hold their car collection. I found those in the Target dollar spot a few years ago. The storage bench on the side hold the boys’ dress up clothes and the two utility bins on the left side hold their rock collection. It is all about finding a easy home for everything. I feel so peaceful when I enter their room now. It is easy for the boys to put their things away.

Stuffed animal storage

One of my weakness when we travel is buying cute stuffed animals. I really like getting realistic ones when we visit zoo but these animals do take a lot of space.

Keep it contained, I say! It doesn’t have look pretty but should be easy for them to be put away.

Last is the dresser which holds some of the boys clothes as well as some miscellaneous things in the upper drawers. I bought the bear art work as well as the one above the dress up chest at Hobby Lobby last week. It worked out well as the frame art was on sale for 50% off that week which made it very affordable! The boys have their own bathroom which you can see a peek of in the right hand side of the picture.

Since we often call the boys our bears, I thought the bear art work worked really well for their room.
