Mount Sterling, KY and Keeneland, KY
To take a break from hiking, we decided to find a small picturesque town to visit. Someone at the grocery store suggested Mount Sterling so we headed that way with a picnic packed. We did save money on this vacation by buying groceries and packing a picnic lunch every day. We shopped in a couple local boutiques, ate our lunch in a little square and took some pictures.
Mount Sterling
This outfit of the day was fairly comfortable until I realized that we were walking too much for these shoes. By the time we visited the arboretum, I took them off and walked barefoot! This town was pretty small so we only spent a little over an hour here.
We wanted to visit a local antique shop but it was closed that day of the week. The market was only open on weekends but at least there were a number of shops to frequent.
The little square had some bistro tables and chairs but could have used some shade. Many towns in Kentucky are struggling as the state has just recently reopened.
I was very impressed with how cute this small town. For such a small town there were some fun photo opportunities and I am glad we stopped by.
Keeneland
We really took advantage of our day and made several stops. We stopped by the Aviation Museum of Kentucky and accross the street was Keeneland. Keeneland is a the horse racecourse, and a horoughbred horse racing facility, as well as a sales complex. Both are in Lexington, Kentucky.
Of course since this was a last minute visit, we didn’t time it very well and missed the morning viewing of the horses. We were able to walk part of the grounds but because of Covid couldn’t go near the stables.
We did learn a little about jockeys and betting!
Come back on Friday! I will share a fun spa/castle/hotel we discovered down the road in Versailles (they do not pronounce it like the French do) and the arboretum in Lexington! By the way, all of the activities this day were free apart from the museum which was inexpensive. Finding things to do on a budget is possible everywhere!
A bientôt!

What a beautiful place to visit.
When I was a child we always brought lunches with us on our “outings” because with a large family it was the only way we could afford the outing.
We haven’t been out much this year, but prior to that I found as an adult I was still bringing food on outings when possible because I liked having food I liked rather than settling for what was available.

There is something about eating outdoors and having a picnic. My favorite would be bringing a baguette, some cheese and some fresh tomatoes to remind me of France. But what we did on this break was nice too.

I keep seeing umbrellas displayed as art and it is so pretty! It seems they have something like this in a lot of cities. I love your idea of packing a picnic lunch everyday to save money.
