New Orleans: Audubon Zoo

Happy Wednesday! I am starting my recap of our vacation in New Orleans, LA with our trip to the zoo. This was our first outing, the day after our 8 hour or so drive from Atlanta. We did stop for lunch and gas at Buccees on the way down and of course we had to have a couple extra bathroom breaks. We had visited the Audubon zoo once before on our last trip 4 to 5 years ago. I wasn’t in the greatest of mood this particular morning so I didn’t enjoy it as much as the first time.

I love this fountain area at the entrance of the zoo. It is very realistic and the water just makes you want to jump in especially as it gets hot in New Orleans. As you will see in upcoming posts, I chose dresses and loose clothes to wear which was the right choice.

We carried our packback of waters in but left our backpack cooler in the car: a mistake. I ended up having to walk back to the car later on since everyone was hungry and only one restaurant was open with not many choices.

I think a couple of the flamingos were nesting as they sat and didn’t get up. They would just stretch their next towards the water. Have you noticed how the flamingo exhibit is always a stinky area?

It is always fun to see the peacocks walk around. You can hear them first and the boys went in search of them.

One of my favorite animals on this zoo visit was the sun bear. We usually don’t see the sun bears do much at our zoo and it was interesting to observe this one on the tree. Then it was really neat to observe how large their claws were: this little display was a nice visual.

I had to take a picture of the sloth in the nocturnal exhibit since it’s my friend’s favorite. This little building was pretty neat and dark and allowed us to observe bats and a few other animals.

We watch the Wild Kratts show at our house and the boys are pretty knowledgeable about animals. We have watched an episode about anteaters but not many zoos can boast having one. The Audubon zoo’s anteater was quite active pacing back and forth.

The zoo is divided in sections by continents and my favorite was Asia probably because of the cool setting. I loved the elephants and this little area. We took some outfit blog pictures here and enjoyed some quiet as I did this area with only my 8 year old before joining the rest of the family.

We booked our tickets online which allows you to choose a day with a slighter cheaper price and this way the tickets average $23 per person for our family. Come back on Friday to explore the New Orleans Botanical gardens with me!

A bientôt!

Great post, Mireille, love the elephants. Sounds as though it’s pretty hot now, we’re still quite cool and rainy here in the UK!

Looking forward to more posts about New Orleans – would love to visit it one day!

Definitely not cool here but we actually have had some cooler days with clouds this week so we are enjoying that!

I don’t like Zoo’s that much as I used to do anymore. I almost always feel so sorry for those animals. I like wild life parks better. But with kids it is a great day out!

Very true: I do know that the good zoos are really good as far as helping keep some animals out of the endangered species so I think some zoos are probably better than others. But I do agree wild life parks are so much better for giving space and more natural habitats to animals.

Yes, the flamingos are always so stinky! HAHA Our local zoo has an anteater and a moon bear too. There is a swing in the moon bear enclosure and we saw them playing with it once; those claws are HUGE!

That would be fun to see the sun bear swinging. I always like it when I see the animals do fun things!

I too love it when peacocks roam freely at zoos, although there haven’t been any at the last few zoos we visited! This looks like a really nice zoo and always a good idea to get tickets online!

We occasionnally see them but this is one of the few recent zoos where I have seen them walking around.

We did go to the aquarium too, we found it to be small (we have a membership to the one in Atlanta and it is quite large and impressive). I do try to take the boys to each zoo in new cities.

I have a really soft spot in my heart for zoos! The Fort Wayne Children’s Zoo opened when I was a little kid. Our extended family would picnic at the park there and then all go to the zoo after eating. My dad had a Marine pal who lived in Toledo so we visited the Toledo Zoo regularly. Indianapolis has a good zoo, but the Fort Wayne zoo has spoiled me for all other zoos. it is amazing! I have always thought the stinkiest area was the bat house. I don’t think I’ve ever noticed flamingos being especially stinky…but I will now!

Been to New Orleans about a half dozen times and never to their zoo. It looks very nice. And I would say dresses and loose clothing are the perfect things for that incredible Louisiana humidity.

I have read and reread and looked at those elephants and still can’t be sure if they are statues or real. You said the fountains were so realistic. Are those real elephants in the fountains?? If not, they sure look real. Love the shot of the giraffe too.

Glad you had a nice time. Surprised only one restaurant or cafe was open. We usually try to go to the zoo between meals and just pick p a snack. But heck, you can go broke just buying snacks these days.

The elephants are statues! I always love these types of sculptures because they sure do look real. They said they were understaffed which was why only one spot was open for food, but they did have a couple food trucks in the zoo itself in a grassy area.
