A Campus Visit: Georgia Tech
A few weeks ago, my son and I went on a campus visit to one of the colleges he is interested in attending. Georgia Tech is about 45 minutes from us if Atlanta traffic is agreeable and is located in midtown Atlanta. Georgia is a research university with an emphasis on advanced research and technology. The campus is right off the I75 and in town but you wouldn’t know it is in Atlanta apart from the occasional peek at a skyscraper.
The campus is compact with 400 acres with wooded areas and you can walk from one end to the other is 15 to 20 minutes. There are trees, bushes and grass areas that create a peaceful environment. Our first impression was very favorable and we loved how pretty the campus was.
Not only are there many green areas but the architecture is really pretty. The tour was very informative and we had several takeaways from our visit. The first one was the importance of getting together with your advisor the first semester to plan out which classes to take so as not too waste time and making sure you are on track.
Another thing that was emphasized was the opportunity for co-ops and internship opportunities. Georgia partners with a number of companies that offer co-ops where the students works a semester (these average $22-26/hour). Students take the semester of to work and will work 2-3 semesters throughout their time at Georgia Tech, typically a couple of summer semesters and a spring or fall semester.
The college has a campus in Metz, France and one in China where Georgia Tech professors teach which is a very exciting opportunity.
Does the stairway with the wooden steps/seating area look familiar? If you have watched “The Intership”, you will recognize it! This building holds the library and a coffee shop among other things. The library can host up to 2500 students: homework is a big part of students’ lives on this campus. Georgia Tech is one of the top school for engineering students.
I am not sure which school my son will attend after graduation, this is definitely a strong contender. He will be doing early admission for his top choices in August and still has all of next year to make his decision. I love the idea of him not being too far away and the pretty campus at Georgia Tech definitely made a strong impression.
A bientôt!

We just went on our first college tour this weekend and had a very similar experience! The school we looked at is about 50 minutes away and sounds like it has so many opportunities through classes, job fairs, exchange programs, and internships. I’m finding this to be such an exciting time!

Wow! It looks like a beautiful campus! It sounds like a nice distance from you too. Not too far, but not too close either.

Exactly!

What a beautiful campus! Just think of the photos you can pose in there! This is such an exciting time for all of you. One of the things that I wasn’t prepared for was not being privy to our kids’ choices for classes and grades. Because they were adults, the college/university didn’t have to share it with us. Good luck to your son as he narrows down his choices…what kind of engineer does he want to be?

He probably wouldn’t want his mama to visit too often lol! Unless he wanted some spending money so then he would take blog pics for me there!

Gosh, what a gorgeous place. And I like how it’s not too big and spread out. It’s incredible to think you have a son getting ready to go to college,
