Our food in Costa Rica: 2023 Fall Break
Yum! The food was delicious in Costa Rica, and we ate very well as you will see from the pictures I took. Even though I paid cash for the food at the local sodas (small restaurants) and we went grocery shopping for several meals, the food at the resorts added up quickly for a family of 6 (that will show up on our credit card bill). Our favorite was the food from the sodas and we made sure to pick ones that local people went to and they did not disappoint.
The Sodas
The natural fruit juices were wonderful. I think we had about 5 different kinds and here are some of the ones we really loved: carambola (starfruit), tamarindo, cas (my favorite) and guava. Food in the sodas ranged from 3000 to 4500 colones (6 to 9 dollars and usually included juice-the higher price), rice and beans, a meat, a salad and a slice of fried plantain.
I also tried a fried plantain tostada plate (below) which was okay but too much food for one person. The picture on the right is from the first place we stopped out outside of San Jose after picking up our rental car.
Food at Tulemar Resort
Breakfast was reasonably priced however coffee, juice and water were not, so we only ate one breakfast at the resort restaurant. Pictured are avocado toast (I took off the peppers), French toast and 2 eggs tomato skillet.
We ordered room service the first night (not pictured) and ordered food from the restaurant for lunch at the beach. My pulled pork tacos pictured above were really good!
Grocery Shopping in Costa Rica
To save money, we stopped at a little supermarket just down the street from the resort. My favorite buy was the mamones (those red spiky fruit) followed by those eggs.
Here is a close up of the mamon fruit. It tastes like a very sweet grape but more delicious. It has a pit in the middle that you do not eat.
Arenal Springs Resort and Spa
At this resort, breakfast was included and we took full advantage of the wonderful buffet. I tasted dragonfruit for the first time as well as passion fruit (very strange texture). The scrambled eggs were really good as well as the assortment of cheeses and fruit.
We had dinner at the resort, first night included Costa Rican food, and the 2nd night was sushi and pizza. Above is one of the boys dinner and one of the desserts we shared.
Lastly, we ate at the Hilton in San Jose our last night. Food was very expensive and we ate a mid day lunch there. Hubby and son took advantage of the complimentary food offered in the executive lounge as “dinner” and breakfast was included with our night (which we used hotel points for).
A bientôt!

Found your post very interesting as I knew nothing about typical food in Costa Rico. A sweet photograph of your little boy peeping out over the dinner table!

Thanks, Joan. We love trying new things and the smaller places are usually more authentic.

What incredible food, Mireille! I’ve never had dragon fruit or passion fruit, either. I’m kinda picky when it comes to fruit. It’s a texture thing for me. But, all of your photos make the food look positively scrumptious! I hope you had a wonderful time!

You probably would not like the texture of passion fruit, very strange!

It’s so cool to experience the local food when you’re there. Especially the different fruits because even if you can get them at the stores here, most of the time they aren’t the same!!

For sure! I looked at the price of dragonfruit at Kroger the other day, $5.99 for one!

The beverage and the meal both seem appetizing.

Yummy food offerings in Costa Rica!

So much of this reminds me of the meals we ate when visiting family in the interior of Panama. The plantains were staples and they prepared yucca quite often. The tamales steamed in banana leaves, too. Different from the tamales we have here in El Paso. It’s been years and years since I had a good Panamanian meal but I have never forgotten them. Thanks for the trip down Memory Lane.

My husband really wanted some yucca one night but he wanted it simple and the resort had this fancy thing with it.
