Runner’s Spotlight: Me
I have definitely talked some about my running journey, but since I have share some of my running friends’ journey in a special format the past few months, I decided I would a turn sharing mine in the same manner. Running is definitely part of my weekly routine and an important part of my life as it makes a positive impact on my health, mental and physical.
When and How Did You Start Running?
It will be 3 years this summer. Before then I walked and hiked regularly, but did not run. That one summer in 2021, I had enrolled my son in a local running camp and the coach mentioned the adult running club. At first, I was weary about getting involved, so I put off my decision to join for a month or so. During that time I decided to run with a neighbor, but I made several beginner mistakes. The first one was not buying some running shoes, followed by running too fast, too long and too often the first weeks. I ended up with shin splints and couldn’t run for about 2 weeks. I hurt walking and going up and down stairs. Once I felt better, I learned from my mistakes, joined the running club, and bought good running shoes!
What Keeps You Running?
It’s fun to run: I may struggle while running, I may complain about hills and speed workouts, but after a run, I feel a wonderful sense of accomplishment. I am energized and since I always run with a friend, my need for social adult interaction is fulfilled. My running mates are my prayer mates and a very supportive group. We laugh together and are there for each other. Of course, winning a medal when I do enter a race is quite fun too! I haven’t raced as much after my first year (when I ran a 5K monthly), but am getting back to running a few races in the year. I will be running a half marathon this weekend, planning to run a 5K in June and a 10K in October.
Do You Have any Goals Associated with your Running?
I am hoping not to walk this weekend during my half marathon, but I do not really have any long term associated with my running. I would like to continue running without injuries for many years. and maybe one day, run/walk a marathon very slowly! I enjoy running more for the social aspect than anything, and I love getting together with my friends for a run.
What do You Like the Best/Least about Running?
Best: I think my top too would be the friendships I have formed in our running club and my Saturday sunrise crew followed by the health benefits. I feel better mentally after running and I am in better physical shape since I started running.
Least: injuries: I have learned what works for me as it seems that I am prone to getting shin splints. I wear calf compression sleeves and watch the frequency/length of my runs. I run longer runs when preparing for a half marathon (only once a year), but otherwise typically run twice a week for 3 to 4 miles a week. I prefer to run in the cold than in the heat: 28 degrees is much better than 92 degrees!
Share a Running Story or Adventure.
This is not exactly a running adventure but I shows you how our Saturday Morning Crew thinks! We decided to have an annual Christmas breakfast, so we met at my house for a 4 mile run at 6:30 on a Saturday last December before indulging in a delicious potluck breakfast. This was our largest running Saturday morning group to date at 18 ladies!

Thanks for sharing your love of running! I can’t run long distances because of my back but I admire all that do. So happy to hear that you have developed wonderful frienships because of it.

It is easy to see how your love for running has grown into a favorite pastime. I do not run, but I enjoy being out in nature and walking with friends.

I love that you love running! Sometimes I wish I loved it but I don’t. I don’t mind doing parking lot laps at my gyn but the building laps, I feel like I’m dying!

I think it’s wonderful you’ve found a group of friends as well as a way of keeping fit that you enjoy. I can’t run due to my my bad foot, but I can walk pretty fast!

I like walking better because it is easier, but the running gives me the little workout that I need.
Sue from Women Living Well After 50
Hi Mireille, I’m always happy to read about fellow runners. At 66, I started running at 50, encouraged by women who were much younger than me. Since then I’ve run countless fun runs including 4 marathons at 55, 61,63,&64 and several half-marathons. I love the feeling of accomplishment, the strength I feel in my body and the friendships we make with fellow runners. Each Saturday I run with a friend and we have been doing this for about 15 years. We run and chat and then have breakfast. Keep going with your running and enjoy! thanks for sharing at #WeekendTrafficJamReboot

Wow! We have thought about marathons but I am not so sure. I just finished my 2nd half this weekend and I am thinking next time, I need to do one in cooler weather. Hot and humid is no fun! Running with friends makes such a difference!
