Enjoying Food in the Republic of Georgia

First of all, let me preface that one of my favorite things about vacations abroad is the variety and freshness of foods as well as the act of not having to cook any meals! Today’s post is full of colorful pictures of food: one of my favorite things in the republic of Georgia is the food: the recipes are heavy with spices, walnuts and fresh ingredients. “Fast food” items are freshly baked in these little kiosks or small holes in the wall and rich in beans, cheese or sausage. Meals are a love affair and rich in traditions especially dinner: it usually will include wine and toasting. You can also look back at this post I wrote in 2019 about our 2018 trip when I visited a large fresh market.

I enjoyed the colorful displays of fresh fruits, spices and nuts in tucked away spots. The best prices were in the underground tunnel walkways that allow you to cross major streets safely by walking underground. The prices there were amazingly low.I bought a large bunch of yellow cherries for less than a dollar!

Breakfast

We ate breakfast at about 9 am each morning. Whether at our friend’s hotel or at the Hilton, it was an abundance of food, from eggs to breads, fruits and meats to juices and yogurts.

Tomatoes and cucumber are served at every meal in some form or another. Simply for breakfast or in a walnut salad dressing for lunch.

Lunch or snack food

We saved a lot of money the first week by hitting up small fast food kiosks! The food typically ranges from 2 to 4 laris: 1 dollar equals 2.77 laris right now.

Dinner Time

Dinner was a feast for the eyes and stomach. My favorite meal was a dish made with eggplants, tomatoes, onions and cheese cooked on the stove in a big pan. Our friend served it with a big piece of pork. Another favorite was Georgian garlic chicken.

Georgian Specialties

Compote juices and lemonades were very tasty!

My husband’s favorite: pork bbq or shashlik

I am going to attempt to make those rolled eggplants with walnut paste this weekend. The soup in the middle was delicious! Kinkhali or dumplings from the restaurant (you will see our version next Wednesday).

Needless to say, we all enjoyed the food in Georgia. I actually lost some weight despite the almost daily ice cream treat with all of the walking we did and the water we drank. We also ate only 2 meals a day most days.
