A Day In Montauk, NY
Our first full day outing took us to Montauk, a small town at East end of Long Island. It is know for fishing and its state parks as well as this 1796 lighthouse which houses a museum that includes documents signed by George Washington who commissioned the light house in 1792.
Since it was foggy, you could not see far, but I loved how everything was shrouded in the fog. It was very windy at the top of the lighthouse which is a short 137 steps. The lighthouse was the first in NY and is the 4th oldest working lighthouse in the country. The light flashes every 5 seconds and can be seen up to 19 nautical miles away.
I really enjoyed the museum as I had recently read my friend’s book A Brilliance Convergence (Rachel Gates) which takes place in the 1800s and whose murder mysteries take place near a lighthouse. The hero introduces a new lens which is the Fresnel Lens (see below on the left). The original lens was 12 feet tall and had to be taken down in pieces to be replaced by the new one that is now operated by electricity.
After visiting the museum and walking the grounds, we headed to Camp Hero State Park which has access to beautiful rocky beaches, and has some WWII bunkers, a radar tower since it was once a military base.
We spent an hour or two on this beach and in the state park. Above my husband is looking out at the ocean as there were 2 sea lions in the water (or seals). He enjoyed standing there and have the water break on the rock he was on. It was also really fun to find a variety of dead things on the beach, animals that had been eaten and washed out on the shore (or vice versa). Below I am holding a dead sting ray!
A few other items we found were some dead fish remains, horse shoe crabs, crabs and shark eggs.
I walked back up the path and found this viewing spot which was a beautiful spot of pictures and see the sea shore. The cliffs are eroding so we had to stay away from the edges.
After walking on another trail, we stopped in East Hampton and walked down main street where the rich shop: Louis Vuitton and Gucci were a couple of the stores we spotted. We did by a book in a cute bookstore. I finally got a picture of the beautiful blooms I had noticed the day prior: there are rhododendron bushes everywhere.
A bientôt!

I love to be near the sea, just the sound of it is so relaxing. I love to search for sea glass.

No sea glass on that beach, only natural things! I do love the sea too!

Yes, it was pretty neat even though that meant you couldn’t see that far out.

That sounds like a lovely day. I like to look for sea glass on rocky beaches.

There wasn’t really any trash or man made things on the beach apart from a crab trap which was nice. I do love sea glass though.
