An Afternoon in Dahlonega, GA

The week before school started, I decided it would be fun to have an afternoon outing away from the house. We have visited Dahlonega at least once a year, but always enjoy returning. There are different restaurant options, antique shops to visit and it is less than a 2 hour drive from home. This afternoon, we were on a bit of a time constraint and I will have to remember to not plan that way next time. I think we would have enjoyed spending a little more time there.

This time we decided to visit the Gold Museum which is housed in the building behind me. I wore a thrifted pair of overall shorts with a bodysuit and some aqua/turquoise accessories. It was actually a little chilly for this outfit!

The top of the old courthouse still houses some of the old furniture and set up: it was neat to see how the building was used. The courthouse served Lumpkin county from 1836 to 1965. It is now a state historical site.

The first floor of the building holds the Gold Museum and it was really interesting to learn how large some of the gold nuggets were that were found. The first major gold rush in the nation occured here in the area, 20 years before the 1849 gold rush to California.

For the first time in all of the years we have visited Dahlonega, we walked into Brad Walker’s pottery shop and studio. He taught himself pottery from a young age and has been creating for the past 5 decades! The pottery is clay that has been fired and can be used in an oven or microwave as well as is dishwasher safe.

We observed him making bowls on the pottery wheel and he took time to show us how to create forest creatures when I mentioned that one of the boys had done a couple pottery camps the last couple years. We really enjoyed our stop in his shop.
