Dresses for Days: Styling dresses for Everyday Wear

Do you only wear dresses on special occasions? For many years, dresses were not my first choice when getting dressed. Having spent a childhood wearing dresses and skirts, I was more interested in wearing pants and shorts. However in the past few years, I have really enjoyed wearing a variety of clothes and dresses have once again become of my favorite thing to wear. They are really comfortable in the warmer months when you do not want any fabric sticking to you. There are so many different fabrics, styles and lengths and the right one might be more comfortable to wear than a pair of jeans. Here are some ways I wore dresses the past few weeks.

With a tee

One of my favorite ways to dress down a dress is to pair it with a graphic tee. I then either pair it with sandals or with sneakers. Of course,  colorful earrings also add a fun element to the outfit.

On its own

Sometimes you do not want to cover up the special details on a dress: in this case, the square neckline shines without any extras. This dress is extra versatile as you can wear it off the shoulders too.

I was inspired by Jill (Doused in Pink) in this post to keep my black dress (I had put it in my donation pile) and to style it with a cap and sneakers. Her post reminded me how versatile this dress is and the style of mine is very similar to hers.

With a Halftee

Whether it’s for modesty or because it is a little chilly, layering under a dress can make wearing a dress more practical. I have worn my Halftee with several dresses and keep telling myself I should pick up another one or two. I find my Halftee to be really practical in white but I am thinking that a navy one could be very handy too (use code MIREILLE20 for 20% off).

It’s chilly: layer under and over

Anytime we have a few days of real spring weather (mid 50s to lower 70s), I love every minute of it! I layered leggings under my dress and took advantage of the chillier weather to wear one of my denim jackets! I love the color of this dress (and of course the embroidery) and have had it about 6 years: I wore it at the beach when I was expecting my youngest!

I’ve just started wearing dresses recently and while I do like them (especially on warm/hot days); it’s still tough to picka day to wear them and not have to change into hiking/walking clothes.

I do change out of my dresses on Sundays but during the week, I try to pick a day where I will wear them all day.

I was the opposite – I grew up in a religious environment where women and girls always wore dresses and skirts. I was in my early 30s when my parents passed away and some of my friends persuaded me to try on some trousers. I was really nervous but went along with it even though it did not seem right at the time. I was told that I looked great – and shortly afterwards I bought some black dress pants. I eventually plucked up the courage to wear them to my office on a cold day and you can imagine the comments “Wow! Rebecca – but you don’t wear trousers” I got used to them and wore them regularly and then bought some Levi jeans for weekends. Ten years later I wear trousers and jeans most of the time!

I guess I started wearing what I wanted (pants and things once I moved out and my parents didn’t have a say anymore) around my twenties. I definitely wore a majority of pants and jeans during my twenties and thirties and now it’s a good mix!

I have a lot of sweaters that work well over dresses and then add boots, voila, winter wear!

I didn’t use to, but having found some styles I really like, I am coming to love the variety.

My favorite dresses have been thrifted (the best were from consignment stores) because there are more styles there than in stores. It took me a while to get to my current collection but they sure are perfect for when it gets warm.

I know! I just think it is funny that for a while I really didn’t wear them much but lately I am loving them!
