Hiking near the beach

Most of the places we go to the beach have wildlife refuges or state parks nearby. As we were looking for an outing and we love to hike, we came upon the Bon Secour Wildlife refuge. We chose one of the trails and hiked for about an hour or two at a slow pace.

I love these trails because you see different types of flora and fauna, in this case mostly flora, many different cool plants!

Isn’t deer moss really cool? It belongs to the lichen family and is very slow growing. It felt spongy to the touch.

The brackish water gave the water a strange reddish tint. We were on the lookout for turtles or gators but no luck! The day was a little cool so nothing was sunning itself.

One part of the trail went through a really neat area bordering a pond and was made of sand. It made it a little more difficult to walk especially with a cute weight on my back. We turned back after a while.

Everyone enjoyed our hike which I was very grateful for: with 4 adults and 6 kids, you never know what is going to happen!

I had to add a picture of this solar powered outhouse that came in very handy on our walk: inevitably someone’s gotta go!!

A bientĂ´t!
