Holiday Sunday Showcase: Fun Christmas Traditions and Link Up

While we do different things in our family to remember what the real reason for the season is: the celebration of the birth of Christ (such as reading excerpts from the Gospels, going to church, looking at and playing with our Nativity scenes), today’s post is about the silly and fun things that we enjoy doing during the month of December leading to Christmas/Nativity. Ada (Elegance and Mommyhood) and I are sharing some fun Christmas traditions new and old. Don’t forget to stop by her post to see what they do the month leading to Christmas.

Hot Cocoa Bar

We had a few nights of hot cocoa last year but we often forgot about it so this year, I decided to create a hot cocoa bar using one of my carts so that the boys could enjoy a fun hot cocoa several times a week.

Cookies, candy canes, mini marshmallows, sprinkles and whipped cream are some of the items they can add to their cocoa. I limit the choices to two to prevent an overdose of sugar. The boys do not fail to remind me that every other night is a hot cocoa night!

I would say it is probably their favorite activity! We also took some hot cocoa on our annual Christmas light scavenger hunt and enjoyed it with a Christmas movie or two.

Matching Christmas PJs

While I did buy everyone matching tops and bottoms, these pictures only include the bottoms. I do need to make sure next year to buy the correct sizes: I made a mistake with one top and since we opened these on St. Nicholas Day, I was not able to exchange it for a larger size.

Stockings

One of my favorite things growing up was opening my stocking. My parents would leave our stocking on our bed while we slept and we were allowed to open the little gifts as soon as we woke up. I asked may mom if I could have our old ones as a keep sake and she brought them over last week. She hand made them about 35 to 40 years ago!

I think from now on, I will hang them on our mantle each Christmas.

Nowadays, we open them all on Christmas Day before church (we wait to open the real presents till after church). As each boy was born, I continued with the theme of snowmen. This year, their little gifts did not all fit in the stocking so I added the rest to a gift bag behind each stocking.

Crafts and More

I always make a list of activities and crafts to add to an advent calendar. We have done a few this year including making a lopsided gingerbread house, baking Christmas cookies and a few crafts.

I take my cues for the crafts from the boys. They chose to participate or not and decide which art activity we should try.

I hope you enjoyed this little peek into some of our Christmas traditions! What are some Christmas activities that you try to do each year?

Blogger Feature

The featured blogger today is Shelbee from Shelbee on the Edge with her post featuring her Reindeer Dress! I would love to shop Shelbee’s closet: she has such a fun collection of shoes, the greatest kimonos and a treasure grove of clothes that she creates cool and fun outfits with. Her reindeer dress is really fun and holiday ready without being too Christmasy! I really love it!

What wonderful family traditions! I think next year I need to create a hot cocoa corner on our counter where we keep our cocomotion so we remember to make a few more mugs of cocoa and add in some fun mix’ins.

What lovely Christmas traditions! We do stockings too, although this is the first year I got the kids Christmas PJs. i didn’t get us matching ones, but couldn’t resist picking up an adorable set for them in the outlets a few weeks ago – perfect for Christmas! 🙂

Thanks for the link up 🙂

Hope that you had a wonderful Christmas! 🙂

We had a really nice Christmas with family. Now enjoying the rest of the school break. I am really enjoying not having to get up early and getting the boys to school!

Mireille, I really enjoyed reading your traditions and seeing all of your wonderful family! We used to get matching pajamas every year as well, but the shirts always ended up too small compared to the pants! That’s when I stopped buying sets and started buying coordinating separates. And then I stopped getting matching pajamas at all. But my kids do love to match their clothes and they both got lots of tie dye this year upon their request! Thank you so much for the feature this week! And all of your kind words made me tear up a little! I would love to invite all my blogging friends to come play in my closet! Hehe. I hope you have a wonderful week and a very happy new year!

You are very welcome! I think I will stick to bottoms next year and maybe just get some plain long sleeve tees for everyone that would work for other things.

It’s just lovely to read about your traditions and see your boys enjoying their drinks and doing stuff together. Christmas in our house was very much spent with family and centred around our two children. Happy days!

The boys have really enjoyed the season this year. I’ve been trying to do a better job at being consistent: I usually have good ideas that last just a couple of days =)

Lovely to read about your traditions, particularly the cocoa bar! I am glad you remember the origins of Christmas, so many people don’t nowadays, and children don’t know the reason why we celebrate. Thanks for the link-up, and for joining mine!

Thanks, Gail! The cocoa bar has been a lot of fun for the kids. We try to keep Christ in Christmas because children sure get distracted by the other stuff!

I love these traditions, especially the stocking on the bed. That’s the first time I’ve ever heard that and I think what a brilliant idea especially for the early risers. I love the hot coco stand as well and we have had one for a few years that sticks around more or less until end of February. The kids and their friends love it and it’s a good way to entice them to get outdoors even when it’s really, really cold.
