Build an Outfit: How to Create an Interesting Look

I sometimes put on just a cute sweater, pants and sneakers and call it a day but some days, I try to create a new outfit from my closet or decide to add extra interest to my look of the day.  I am working on spending less and wearing more of what I have creating new outfits with the same pieces. Today, I wanted to share the creation of 3 outfits to show you my process.

New Outfit with Blush top

The outfit on the right is my first outfit: I had not worn my blush top at all this season and I wasn’t sure if it still had a place in my closet. After wearing it, the answer was yes! So I then decided to create a different outfit with it on another day, tucking it in my white jeans and changing shoes too.

Cute outer wear can also be part of an outfit: I bundled this top with my poshmark order (with the Kyla Seo shirt I shared on Monday) getting a nice discount in the process. I love the detachable hood, the buttons and pretty cut.

Steps to Add Interest

Cute outfit, right? And yes, this would be fine but I wanted to add some completer pieces to make it an outfit with layers of interest. By the way, this Free People top was shopped from another’s blogger closet (Andrea from Living on Cloud Nine) and I love how fun and flowy it is!

I then added a scarf which picked up the gold/mustard in the top. I tried wearing it doubled but I didn’t really like it that way.

Last I tried a couple toppers since it is winter after all and settled on this faux leather jacket that added an edge combined with the combat boots. What do you think?

1, 2, 3

Once again I started with something I had not worn in a while, this plaid shirt. I tend to not wear my button downs much which is why I do not have many. I picked my white jeans for contrast.

Add some fun patterned earrings for some print mixing: using patterns in the colors, small vs big pattern is an easy way to pattern mix.

I felt I needed to elongate the look so I picked this shirt dress that I have been using as a vest since it is too tight on me and add some black wedge sneakers.

I don’t always add a third piece to an outfit especially in warmer months but do like to add a scarf or a long pendant when an outfit needs a little extra. I think my favorite part of an outfit is often times the shoes and I do love my shoe collection. My boys still think I have too many shoes but I do wear them all!

I fully admit that I tend to just grab the sweater and jeans most days but those times I do feel like adding a little something “extra” to my outfits I do end up feeling more put together. Though I rarely think of adding outing wear as part of my outfit and I reall should! I see lots of great ideas on here for stepping it up a bit.

Your boys haven’t seen how many shoes I have, haha.
I always like these kinds of posts Mireille. Even your plaid shirt could be worn as a jacket!! I never used to have many button ups, but now that I wear them as jackets OR under crew neck sweaters, I seem to have collected a few!!!

Ha ha! Yes! I have never counted all of mine and half of mine or hidden half the seasons so it looks like less to me but still a lot to them. I do usually wear the plaid shirt open. I just don’t like the fit when closed: I feel wider in my mid section.

I totally agree the shoes make each outfit! I need to switch my shoes on my outfits, I think it could give “new life” to some of my older everyday outfits : )

Oh yes! The shoes can make such a difference! I sometimes have to try a few before settling on one that bring the outfit up a notch.

They sure are! I really didn’t like the last outfit much in pictures with the plaid shirt but the concept I did! I really have been having fun trying some new things. This week I did 3 dresses over denim after seeing Jodie do that several times and it really worked out good. I will be sharing those at some point in March. Today is just leggigns and a long tunic sweater since I want to hike but later I will change for church.

They are fun and they usually last so many seasons! And they oftentimes add a little oomph or spice to an outfit.

it’s great to see what a simple change can make to an otufit! I’m a big fan of adding third pieces – I feel a bit underdressed without one sometimes! I try add a big statement necklace if I can’t think of another piece to add or if it’s too hot to layer, but I usually add a kimono for a third piece in warmer weather too and of course scarves are my go-to in winter! 🙂

Thanks so much for joining the #WeekdayWearLinkup! Hope that you are having a good weekend 🙂 Another sunny day here thankfully, helping things dry out after the floods!

I am going to do a week of kimonos in April to wear all of my kimonos. I haven’t worn one yet this year.
