Atlanta Botanical Gardens: Origami Exhibit
A few weeks ago, a friend and I planned a playdate at the Atlanta Botanical Gardens with our youngests and after some deliberation, I decided to also take his two brothers as I was already planning to take them out of school early as it was Holy Friday. They really enjoyed our outing and are voting that we get our own family membership to the gardens. We were very thankful to be able to go free with our friend but would love the opportunity to go at any time. It was also Earth day so there were a few activities for the children and the weather was a nice spring time temperature so we did not overheat.
When I looked online at what was new at the botanical gardens (it had been years since I had been) I noticed that the Origami event would start on May 7. It has 18 installations and some of them are quite large. I was disappointed that we would miss it but it turned out that most pieces were already set up since it takes a while for all of them to be lifted in place.
These cranes might have been my favorite! I love how many of the pieces just fit right in with the scenery. It was fun to see what we would discover!
The little rabbits were tucked away in the Japenese gardens. This section is one of my favorites: we have taken pictures in this area several times. We probably will wait till our Georgia aquarium membership expires since we can use that till the end of summer and summertime is not going to be a top choice for visiting here: it gets really hot and humid in Atlanta.
This was another one of my favorites which is why I took a picture in front of it for my Mother’s Day blog post. The vibrant colors caught my eye. I think this area is the rose garden and I am hoping to come back to see those in bloom.
We saw one sculpture in the canopy walk area. I will share more pictures focusing on actual plants next week. Once again the set up was not completed yet since this was a couple of weeks before it opened. I think they were planning to plant around the base of this one.
This was another whimsical piece. Once again there will be plants at the base of the sculpture.
Pegasus was quite impressive: you can see his scale in comparison to the man walking by it! He is definetely a show stopper.
I do like that the gardens have permanent pieces (glass sculptures etc) from past exhibits so I am curious if any of these will stay and become part of the garden. Again, I will share those permanent pieces in next week’s post. By the way those pinwheels do move in the wind.
This was one sculpture they were still putting together during our visit. In the background, you can see one of the crates one piece came in in. They were painting the cement base of the sculpture and will have to refill the fountain it sits in. These also are pinwheels and will look so pretty on windy days.
So yes! We enjoyed our visit to the botanical gardens. Since it is not a cheap visit for a family, it is well worth getting a membership and get the opportunity to visit during different seasons and blooming periods.
A bientĂ´t!

I am always curious how they make the art itself: these are metal… I am looking forward to our next visit.

Yes, and so many were so large!

These are incredible, Mireille! Are they made from a resin, metal, or some kind of composite? I do hope the Indianapolis Museum of Art does something like this! I think your boys are right, and you should get a membership there. We love going to Newfields (also the IMA) just as an afternoon getaway! Thanks so much for sharing your photos!

To me, it looked like they were made of metal or maybe a composite. I didn’t get that close =)

Oh my word I love the origami sculptures – love the rose and the tulips. I think this would be a brilliant place to have a membership – you’ll get the best out of it that way 🙂

Yes, because otherwise it would be way too much per visit! I think just going twice in one year you get your money’s worth and I am sure we would go more often than that.

The Atlanta Botanical Gardens has been on my bucket list for years. If I’m ever in that neck of the woods again, I will be going there. Love the Pegasus oragami.
