The Blowing Rock, NC
On Sunday afternoon before the snow started, we decided to go on a little excursion. The Blowing Rock was only about 15 minutes from our rental and is the oldest attraction in North Carolina. The Blowing Rock overlooks the Johns River Gorge and is 4000 ft above sea level. “The phenomenon is so called because the rocky walls of the gorge form a flume through which the northwest wind sweeps with such force that it returns light objects cast over the void.” We were able to observe this with the snow flurry that were coming up toward us instead of down.
So we actually got to observe what is described on the website: “The current of air flowing upward from The Rock prompted the Ripley’s “Believe-It-Or-Not” cartoon about “the only place in the world where snow falls upside down.”
The entrance and gift shop were in a lovely building. I loved the red accents of the doors and roof and the stone work. We enjoyed walking on the trails and found this to be a family friendly attraction: the walks were manageable and short.
Thankfully, we were prepared for the cold because it was windy! We had hats, jackets and gloves.
The boys and my husband went back towards the rocks in the background to feel the wind. The boys said their faces went numb and my husband said the wind was about 50 miles an hour in that spot overlooking the gorge.
I took pictures and videos of the snow and enjoyed the scenery without the wind.
You can see the snow flurries in these pictures. We returned to our rental from here and enjoyed the snow falling on our way back and were excited to see it stick!
A bientôt!

I don’t like snow at all but in a setting like that, and with time off, I would even enjoy it!

Yes, when you are not having to drive in it and can enjoy its beauty, it makes a difference.

How nice of the weather to cooperate and allow you to see the phenomenon first hand!! I think North Carolina is a beautiful state. Always imagined I would live there. Wound up in Texas instead.
