Provins, Medieval town
Provins became a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2001. The town is known for its remparts, Cesar tower and fortified walls. The tower dates from the 12th century. Provins held a well known annual trade fair in medieval times and the town also boasts undergrounds tunnels with inscriptions. There are different tours you may take to learn about the city but since we had already done a couple of those in the past, this time we chose to wander the streets, the remparts and go to one of the shows, the legend of the knight.
We first walked from one rempart gate to another. Since there were some renovations happening, we could not walk at the base of the fortified walls but followed the road surrounding it. You could go up on the remparts at the gates and that is where my son is standing.
We walked through town and ate a picnic at the base of the Cesar tower. The tower was a symbol of power for the earls of Champagne and had several uses over the centuries as a watch tower, a prison, a bell tower and a military retreat. Since we had not gone up in the tower on our last visit to Provins, we decided to get tickets to do that. It was fairly inexpensive for our family if I remember correctly at 4 euros for adults and 2 for children.
The self guided tour took us through the different rooms of the tower, the bell room, and ended with a short video about the earls of Champagne.
Afterwards, we headed to the medieval show which was my little knight’s favorite thing from the whole trip. The legend of the knight was a love story as well as a story about good and evil and was also filled with humor.
We were grateful for good weather with just a quick rain shower. Traveling with children is always challenging especially with a toddler who needs his nap and thankfully we had borrowed a stroller so the baby was able to take a short nap as we walked around the town.
I think my favorite part about traveling in France, and especially in the villages is how picturesque everything is. Flowers, old buildings, churches… it is all so pretty!
This was a great destination for us since it was less than an hour from our friends’ house and we knew the children would enjoy the experience.
A bientôt!

I’m impressed your toddler is able to take a nap in the stroller! I get excited when mine goes to sleep in the car because she rarely does that! She has been a pretty good traveler this vacation though so I really can’t complain and having a few hours in the afternoon back at the condo or hotel is kind of nice for me! This place looks so pretty and fun!

His nap in the stroller are really short, just enough to take off the edge of his tiredness. He actually sleeps much longer in the carrier if we are on the go.

They did! They were kind of disappointed it was not a castle per se but visiting the tower helped. Next time we visit France we will visit Carcassonne which is impressive as far as medieval town and castle!
