Packing for a Hiking Vacation

Our usual week long vacations destinations are to the beach while our bigger vacation take us abroad. We have occasionally gone to the mountains for a few days but we have never taken a week vacation in the mountains. Therefore, for this vacation I had to think differentlty. I had to pack items that would work on dirt trails, in water and maybe a cave visit. Being me though, I still will wear my statement earrings and will try to be fashionable. I decided to pack one dress but everything else can be mixed and matched for hikes or slightly streneous exercise.

Shoes

I am packing 4 pairs of shoes: one to dress up outfits, the others to be used when outdoors.

My tennis shoes are just a couple months old since I needed to update mine especially after having a problem with shin splints. I will use these for my morning walks and occasionally for hikes.

My Timberland hiking boots are hand me downs and several years old but are a great hiking shoe. I have to wear higher socks because they will rub my ankle but otherwise are very comfortable.

You have seen my purple Keens here and there. They are great for hiking, walking in rivers and doing water activities. They dry quickly, have good traction and let my feet breath. I have 2 pairs of Keens both in children size (easier on the budget and fun colors) and have had no regrets about buying them. They both are years old!

My yellow sandals are new and so much fun! Yellow shoes are awesome and I recommend getting a pair: great contrast in color and they add a fun element to any outfit. They can be paired with joggers, shorts and dresses alike.

In full disclosure, I am bringing my white Adidas too (pictured below) since I plan to take some blog pictures for The Sunday Showcase Link up with Ada next Sunday.

Bottoms

What works best for hiking? I think it is mostly a personal preference: I do like shorts if it is really hot but joggers that are light weight will protect you a little more from bug bites and scratches from bushes and branches.

I decided to bring my 3 top joggers: the grey and black ones from Nordstrom are not in stock anymore but I love the material because it dries well and breathes well (88% recycled polyester, 12% spandex). The camo joggers are thicker but a fun print and just a little dressier. Might be perfect for a cave tour!

I also am bring two pairs of shorts:my denim shorts and my olive ones. I really see myself wearing the joggers more but I like to have options. All the tops I will bring can be paired with any of these bottoms.

Tops

Keeping it simple with my tops too: I am choosing to bring all graphic tees and 2 printed tees. I have accumulated a little collection this year shopping sales and second hand. Any of these can also top my dress.

Just in case it gets cooler at night, I am bringing my red white and blue sweatshirt and my cardigan wrap. A girl can dream for cooler weather, right?

One dress

My dress you have seen several times in the last 2 weeks: I can get enough of it, it is packable, versatile and comfortable so it is coming with me! Not sure if I will have an occasion to wear it but I will have it just in case.

So this post is just to show you to be you! On a outdoorsy vacation, you might be more comfortable with workout clothes and lounging clothes and if that is the case, then that is what you should pack. I have so much fun getting dressed that I like to feel put together even on a hike: that means a pair of earrings and wearing some of my favorite comfy but stylish clothes! I think the most important part is probably the shoes: no blistered nor cramped feet: wear shoes that will hold up and that you will not run! I will also be packing some workout clothes since I hope to run at least 3 or 4 times.

It is funny how much stuff we are taking: an inflatable bed, a big blanket for a pallet for the little one, food plus swimming things and all of our clothes. I pack much better and less when we go abroad!

You take a lot more dressier clothes than I do on a hiking vacation. I almost always wear exclusively fitness wear, and I use my fitness wear skorts and nicer tees for evening dinners. I do bring one pair of nicer shoes too! I love your idea of wearing lightweight joggers to prevent against bug bites and scratches. I only have active wear leggings, which are usually too warm to wear in summer. I will have to invest in some joggers I think.

I love that dress and I hope you do get an opportunity to wear it! You have packed really well – I agree, the right shoes are so important! You are sure to enjoy your trip πŸ™‚

Hope that your weekend is going well πŸ™‚ It’s a quiet one here as it’s raining again!

It’s funny because I realized I forgot my running shoes when we arrived. So I will be wearing my white Adidas more which kind of dresses up everything. It is really beautiful here!

I ended up forgetting the dress and my running shoes. My keens gave up on life on my 2nd day here (I have another pair at home) and we didn’t have ac at the condo for 2 days but despite all of that and me still having to cook, clean and do laundry I am having a good time. I need to learn to ask for help =)
Just being away from home and doing some fun stuff is good for the soul though. And running water so close by and everywhere we go is awesome. Will be sharing on some blog posts later on!
