A Few New Organizing Updates at Home

This year, I am focusing on making small changes at home to make some little improvements to toy organization as well as closet organization. I want to streamline a few things, reduce the clutter and the number of things we have laying around the house. I started as soon as the year started and I am sure we continue to declutter throughout the year as we can always do with less.

The boys had 3 tubs under their bunkbeds with legos and really didn’t play with the legos unless those tubs were out. I had the boys help me greatly reduced the number of legos we kept and we sold the rest with one of the tubs (they shared the proceeds). One of the first order of business was to order a few baskets. I took advantage of a little lightning deal discount and picked up the large size of this basket for 3 rooms: one for legos, one for shoes in the living room and one for my bedroom that I am using for my exercise equipment (which I haven’t used in a while.

This is my craft and exercise area and I need to get back to both. I only have been walking and running lately. But I need to use my weights again as well as my rebounder.

Silly how getting rid of my plastic hangers which were not strong enough for some of your jackets has made me happier with this closet. I decluttered it and bought the baskets last year but having uniform baskets in here has helped. We keep several jackets per person in this small closet as we never know what the weather is going to be like in winter.

I read this post this past weekend of How to Live Seasonally to Thrive in Winter. This little spot reminded me of this post. I have been spending more time in the evenings in my room instead of watching tv, lighting a candle and reading. Enjoying the coziness of my space. I finally framed these calendar pictures I have had for years and added my French clock my best friend sent me this Christmas. I am also borrowing the boys’ tree for a while.

Revisiting spaces, decluttering, adding homey touches helps me feel content and cozy in my spaces. The boys actually play more with what they have when they have less and can see what they have. We actually donated about 100 books earlier in the fall. I make sure to revisit my closet often as well as finally tackling spaces like my bedside table: I managed to throw out have the papers/things in there!

I have been braving the cold and having breakfast or coffee on the porch to admire all of the birds who come to the bird feeders. I am craving outside time so am dressing warmly to be outdoors. A walk, a book or watching the boys play outside help fulfill that need for the outdoors.

A bientôt!

I tend to take the time at the start of each year to re-organize any areas that aren’t working in our home and to purge the accumulation of just about everything. I love your French clock/ wall calendar area! My boys used to only play with Legos they could see too so we used some shoe shelfs in each of their rooms stacked together to display a good 8-10 sets each.

I am always surprised how the little improvements make me happier and I love seeing the boys playing with what they have.

Love reading your reflections about Wintering during this season, Mireille! I’m so glad you enjoyed reading my blog about Seasonal Living in Winter. This really is such a beautiful season!

You are always so good about tackling the organizing!! I started with a couple of drawers in my room, but have gotten way laid. But I’ll be excited to show off my scarf organizing one of these days.

I really am enjoying my room much more with these extra details. I am thinking of picking up a leaning ladder bookshelf to add on that same wall but closer to the door out. We shall see.

Your coat closet looks so organized! I keep telling Nigel we need to do some kind of remodel job on ours. All of the hats and mittens are stored in plastic store bags on the builder grade shelf which also is the rod for the hanging coats. I’m so short I just give things a toss to get them up on the shelf which makes it so impractical! I’d love to put some kind of organizer in there and lower the rod, but then the coats would drag….ugh!!

I love your reading area. My bedroom is my oasis, but it’s so cold during the winter (I keep the thermostat at 60).

    Lovely ideas, Mireille!

I have a 3 drawer plastic thing from Target under the coats that holds the mittens and extra hats. I have a shoe holder on the door that I use for caps in the summer and winter hats/beanies in the winter.

I agree that a good declutter always makes me feel 100% better in my own space. While Anya was at school this week and I was at home with COVID I cleaned her room without her help and got rid of items that she has aq hard time parting with. Hahaha. Anywa, I love that you are finding more time to sit and read and relax. That’s always on my “to do list”!

Ha ha! That is what I do with my oldest’s stuff sometimes. I cannot believe how often I have do do that though with everyone’s rooms. It just accumulates.

Great organization ideas, MIreille. I am all about decluttering right now as well. As I go through each room renovation, I plan to throw out more stuff than I will keep! I need a new Lego storage idea myself! Ours are currently housed in a plastic baby pool in the corner of my living room. My kids do still build with them a lot so we are not ready to sell them off yet! But I bet they could make some decent $$$ considering how very many Legos there are in this swimming pool! And doesn’t it make such a huge difference to have sturdy matching hangers in the closets? I hate the way mismatched hangers get all tangled up and don’t hang evenly.

I did the felt/velvet hangers in my closet and it takes so much space. A little expensive even with buying the cheap ones since I needed a lot but I did those over a couple of months last year.

Well, I am braving our southern cold a few times a week, lol! Definitely more enjoyable in the spring but fresh air is nice!
